Red—Robert W. Smith. This popular work
scored here for full orchestra is the first
movement from "Krisanna's Colors," a
suite inspired by the color choices used to
describe the daily emotions and moods of a
terminally ill child. Beginning with a somber
solo and choir, the mood quickly changes
to bombastic and extreme energy. For
even greater effect, consider programming
it along with Blue, Mvt. 2 (#11401002) and
Yellow, Mvt. 3, (#11401003). An excellent

Water on Mars—Kevin Sluder. Take your
players and listeners on a cinematic voyage
to the red planet using connected descending
eighth-note figures to evoke flowing water
and syncopated staccato rhythms to propel
the music forward. A soaring film-inspired
section creates the sensation of orbiting Mars,
while the slower, weightless middle theme
floats with rising lines and soft sustained
tones. Optional saxophone, euphonium, and
harp or synth parts accommodate combined
ensembles, though the piece is fully effective
with traditional full-orchestra instrumentation.

version will find new colors and challenges

Dream Machine—Brian Balmages. This
haunting, powerful, and aggressive work
draws inspiration from a type of strobe
light that can put an observer into a state
of "threshold consciousness," or being half
asleep. The music portrays sensations
including the eerie feeling of the transitional
sleep state and the intense experience of
being surrounded by swirling shapes and
colors, and then ventures into the world of
lucid dreamers. The result is a piece that is
mystical, unsettling, driving, powerful, and
heroic.

Escaping Continuum—Bobby Ge.
Escaping Continuum shares its title with
a painting by my friend and collaborator,
Linda Cichan, who created her work in
the aftermath of a personal tragedy. The
painting's vivid brushstrokes,luscious
contrasts, and sincerity of expression
were deeply moving to me. I saw in the
work amercurial struggle characterized by
darkly obsessive cycles and impassioned,
explosive gestures - apiece as likely to
lose itself in relentless spirals as it was
to lash violently outward. I also saw,
however,a palpable hope in her painting.
Amidst its gradation from murkiness to
light, the piece's primarygesture appeared
to be an act of hurling away a mass of
tortile darkness.I sought to pit two kinds
of music against one another in my piece:
the first darkly romantic andmelodic,
the second machinelike and repetitive.
The two ideas attack one another
throughout,cannibalizing each other from
the inside out - yet in doing so, they find
unlikely ways to coexist.

energy bring the storm to life in a dramatic

endurance against the untamed power of
nature.
