Commissioned by the Jazz Division of the Illinois Music Educators Association for the 2014 Illinois All-State Jazz Ensemble, this in-the-pocket blues swinger has it all! Opening with an extended rhythm section introduction to set the mood, the horns enter with a strong melody. Solid ensemble work and plenty of space for solos over the blues-based changes all combine to make this chart a must-have for any library. Highly recommended! 10366180 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . MA 56.00 4 Artistry in Rhythm—Stan Kenton/arr. Paul Murtha. Composed and recorded by Stan Kenton in the 1940s, Artistry in Rhythm became his signature and a true classic from the big band era. Paul Murtha has skillfully adapted and truncated this for younger players while maintaining the flavor and energy of the original. Solo piano starts things off followed by the iconic trombone solo in the medium Latin section. The exciting double time swing section features the entire ensemble, then the maestoso theme returns to close things out. Impressive! 10374166 Jazz Ensemble. . . . . . . . . . . . ME 45.00 H Autumn Leaves—arr. Peter Blair. This is a great old tune! Except...there's nothing "old" sounding about it. It's a medium swing version of a marvelous, often- played standard that opens with an alto and trumpet duet and is filled with tight ensemble punches. The saxes are featured on a chorus and there is a written or ad lib solo for piano. 2406361 Jazz Ensemble. . . . . . . . . . . . ME 45.00 l Baby, Won't You Please Come Home?—arr. John Berry. Here's a great vehicle for teaching your younger jazz ensemble how to swing. Originally a blues tune from 1919, this familiar song has become an often recorded jazz standard. John Berry's updated version features a comfortable medium swing tempo, a soli for the sax section, and solid tutti scoring for the full band, plus it's playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations. 10427420 Jazz Ensemble. . . . . . . . . . . . . .E 40.00 4 Bernie's Tune—Bernie Miller/arr. Optional reduced or expanded instrumentations. 10061497 Jazz Ensemble. . . . . . . . . . . . .VE 35.00 l Blues in Hoss Flat—Foster & Basie/arr. Rick Stitzel. Here's a great way to introduce the music of Count Basie to your young players. Carefully scored for young groups, this medium swing chart trades the melody between the trumpets and saxes, includes a solo or soli for trumpet, and a brief shout chorus using tutti rhythms for the entire ensemble. Suggested solos and chord/scale sheets in all keys are included, plus it's playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations. 10427422 Jazz Ensemble. . . . . . . . . . . . .VE 35.00 n The Blues Walk—Clifford Brown/arr. Paul Murtha. Introduce your young players to jazz legend Clifford Brown with this classic riff tune. This creative arrangement for developing groups is great for learning to improvise with the suggested solos, and the ensemble figures are repetitive and easy to learn. It's scored for standard jazz ensemble instrumentation, but will sound fine with 4 saxes, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones and rhythm. Also included are optional parts for flute, 2 clarinets, horn in F and tuba. Every band needs to experience the blues! 10052548 Jazz Ensemble. . . . . . . . . . . . . .E 40.00 H C-Jam Blues—Duke Ellington/arr. Stitzel. Whether you know this one as C-Jam Blues or Duke's Place, you sure will recognize all the great Ellington writing! Even the most inexperienced bands can do a fine performance on this jazz classic. The suggested solos are included in the parts for the entire section, so you can make it a soli feature if you prefer. There's a marvelous ensemble tutti section that starts softly then builds to the end. 2470818 Jazz Ensemble. . . . . . . . . . . . .VE 35.00 l Caldonia (What Makes Your Big Head So Hard?)—arr. Rick Stitzel. Made famous by Woody Herman's Thundering Herd, here is a fun chart from the early swing era. The saxes do most of the heavy lifting supported by punches and backgrounds in the brass. Also featured are short solos for tenor and/ or baritone saxes. Suggested solos are included along with chord/scale sheets in all keys and it's playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations. 10427416 Jazz Ensemble. . . . . . . . . . . . . .E 40.00 l Don't Get Around Much Anymore—Ellington & Russell/arr. When it comes to accessible charts in a medium swing style, this one can't be beat! 10427404 Jazz Ensemble. . . . . . . . . . . . ME 45.00 l A Few Minor Changes—Jim Mahaffey. Opening with the trumpets in cup mutes accompanied by the saxes and trombones, this effective swinger evolves with every section of the ensemble getting their chance at the melody. Suggested or improvised solos for Trumpet 2 and Alto Sax 1, reasonable brass ranges, and full band shouts will make this one a reliable favorite. Optional parts are included for Flute, Clarinet, Horn in F and Tuba. 10427248 Jazz Ensemble. . . . . . . . . . . . ME 60.00 4 Give It One—arr. Alan Baylock. You have got to have this spectacular Alan Baylock chart on the Maynard Ferguson and Alan Downey classic! Alan's arrangement is reminiscent of Maynard's version, but in a lower key since the lead trumpet only goes to written D above the staff. The tempo is brisk at about 220 bpm, but it could be played effectively at a slightly slower tempo. Solo space is provided for all four trumpets for flexibility. Truly outstanding, and highly recommended! 10355596 Jazz Ensemble. . . . . . . . . . . . MA 55.00 Blues & Swing Go to cart
