composer Philip Sparke brings elements of the
long history of Jewish folksong to life in this
rich and varied suite for concert band! A wide
spectrum of moods are presented in the three
movements including traditional songs: V'ha'ir
Shushan; Havdala; Hanerot Halalu; Ba'olam Haba;
Mishenichnas Adar; Ani Purim and Yom Tov Lanu.
All movements together take over nine minutes to
perform, but each movement can stand alone as
well, making this appropriate for concert, contest
and holiday programs. We are proud to give this

Shorewood Overture is designed to be performed

in honor of the famed Tuskegee Airmen. This group
of brave African-Americans overcame intense racial
discrimination during World War II to train and fly

drum cadence, the work begins in a hymn-like
manner. This gradually grows to a imposing
statement as they prepare for battle. Sporadic
percussion, boisterous brass and trombone
glissandos represent the intense battle eventually
roaring to a victorious finish. Highly recommended!

Sky," the second portion, takes the listener on Ra's
daily excursion as he flies through the sky to a lively
and dance-like theme. The music turns darker
and more subdued as Ra makes his descent into
the "Underworld." Finally the piece leads to the
"Renewal," which completes the full cycle of the
sun god's day. Captivating!
