of the most memorable melodies ever written, this
Puccini masterpiece is adapted wonderfully here for
concert band. The opening theme is presented by
a solo baritone (cued for trumpet or oboe), and is
followed by soaring statements for the woodwinds
and horn. The trumpets are added as the pieces
build towards its signature climactic ending. Band
music simply doesn't get any classier than this!

NettletonJohnnie Vinson. Most widely known
as Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing, the
early American hymn tune Nettleton is creatively
arranged in this beautiful setting. Using the horns
as a focal point for the first section and followed by
a lyric portion scored for woodwinds, this work also
includes nicely orchestrated sections for brass as
well as effectively written dynamic nuances.

n NevermoreBrian Balmages. This modern work
based on Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" tells
the eerie story of a man confronted by a sinister
bird, and his slow descent into utter madness. A
haunting piano line starts the piece, surrounded
by contemporary effects and textures. As the
man becomes more irritated, the music picks up
in tempo and becomes increasingly dissonant
and violent until it erupts in a cacophony of chaos.
Finally, the man "breaks," and the unsettling
sounds of the opening piano return to conclude the
piece. A truly dramatic work for band.

gsky/Williams. This impressive concert band
adaptation of Moussorgsky's spectacular
