l KaleidoscopeErik Morales. Sporting a diverse
set of styles, this incredibly unique swing chart
features a flugelhorn solo and the trumpet section
with angular themes that invoke images of light,
color and symmetry. The swing section features
a tenor sax solo with simple chord changes or an
optional suggested solo.

n Keystone CupsPaul Baker. A rousing full
ensemble intro, complete with drum solos, leads to
a four bar, walking, written bass solo that sets up the
trumpet section bebop melody, based on "rhythm
changes." As per the title, the trumpets are in cup
mutes for this clever feature. The drummer also has
the option to switch to brushes in this section before
switching back to sticks for the rest of the chart.
An open solo space allows for numerous soloists
with cued backgrounds. An additional feature is
outstanding sax section writing. The shout chorus
begins with a horns only "stop time" section that
builds through the bridge to a flag waving finale!
Trumpet range to written High C. Trombone to F.
Highly recommended, clever, and unique!

4 Lazy Bird (Little Big Band)John Coltrane/arr.
Mike Tomaro. Similar to the style of the original

band arrangement for six horns is a smooth sounding
up-tempo swing chart. Great scoring in the little big
band format! Instrumentation: 3 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1
trombone and rhythm section plus optional additional
parts for alto, tenor and trombone.

suggested tempo is brisk. Written or improv solo
space is provided for alto 1 (or clarinet), trumpet
2, and trombone 1, plus some infectious drum
cadence solos. Additional parts are included for
optional expanded instrumentations. With clever
interplay between the rhythm section and horn

4 The Little DipperMike Carubia. The Little
Dipper is a medium tempo shuffle/blues chart
that swings hard from beginning to end! It
opens with a unison melody by the brass which
is repeated with the sax section playing the
background harmonies. Following the open solo
section the piano and bass are featured, then a
quiet ensemble chorus builds to a roaring shout
chorus. The solos are flexible over easy B-flat
blues changes. The brass ranges are moderately
high with optional lower notes provided and an
optional flute part is included. Don't miss this very
strong chart! Highly recommended!

n Message from WestlakeMike Kamuf.
Message from Westlake is a swinger that cooks
right along at about 172 bpm and features
a melody stated by tenor sax 1, bari sax,
trumpet 2, trombone 1, and guitar with written
out or improvised solos for those instruments.
A stop-time chorus, an absolutely kickin'
shout chorus, a lead trumpet range to a written
B and optional vibes part make this chart
even better. Additional parts are included for
optional expanded instrumentation. Fabulous
chart! Highly recommended!

Alan Baylock. Here is an outstanding tenor sax
feature chart that was composed by pianist Joey
Calderazzo, recorded by the late, great Michael

the solo space, and lead trumpet range is to written
high C. A beautiful tune and superb chart on this
hard-swinging feature!

Minor Swing from the MiddleBill Liston.
This is one of the nicest minor swing charts we
have heard in years! Aside from the outstanding
ensemble passages that highlight all sections of
the band and wonderful full band ensembles, it has
a great bari sax part. After the solo section for alto
sax and trombone, it returns to the head and a soft
ending. This chart can be programmed anywhere
in your set, but could work exceptionally well as an
opener. Highly recommended!

and the mother of all Basie swinging shout choruses,
this is a classic that deserves a place in every jazz
ensemble's repertoire! Highly recommended!

a bluesy "bump and grind" swinger like this than
baritone sax? Written in a medium slow 12/8 feel,
this chart will make your entire band sound great,
plus allow an often neglected player to really shine.
Suggested solo and scale/chord sheet provided.

composer Erik Morales delivers! This outstanding
shuffle chart sounds like a big old freight train

n Phat and SassyPaul Baker. Phat and Sassy
opens with eight bars of Gene Krupa-style tom-toms
and places this chart solidly in the hard-swinging
big-band genre of Benny Goodman and Lionel
Hampton. The saxes charge in with the melody
which is soon traded back and forth with the brass
sections. Tenor sax, trumpet, and drum solos over
accessible changes follow, leading to a trombone
section riff that builds through the ensemble. The
sax section then takes over for a swinging soli before
returning to a shout chorus and ending. This chart is
a real flag-waver that teaches the fundamentals of
the swing style along with an historical perspective.
A super chart that is highly recommended!
