H In the MoodJoe Garland/arr. Jeff Tyzik. Here is
the hot version of this big band standard arranged
by Jeff Tyzik as recorded by Doc Severinson and
the Tonight Show Band. With a dressed up feel
and solos for alto, tenor and trumpet, this timeless
classic never sounded so good!

l In the Wee Small Hours (Pro Version)arr. Billy
Byers. As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra
on the album Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays the
Hits of Frank Sinatra, this Billy Byers arrangement
is a fantastic medium-slow swing chart. It's classic
Basie with a soft, swinging melody, room for solos,
and an "in-your-face" shout chorus which then
returns to the quiet melody with a gentle ending. In
this original version, the shout chorus is unchanged,
and changes are provided for tenor saxophone,
trumpet and piano soloists and the rhythm section.
Big band music doesn't get any better than this!

4 The Jazz Me BluesTom Delaney/arr. Brent
Wallarab. Originally written in 1920 by Tom
Delaney, and recorded over the years by Bix
Beiderbecke, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band
and many others, this medium-advanced swing/
Latin setting commissioned by IMEA for the 2015
Illinois All-State Jazz Ensemble gives the tune a
contemporary attitude for a whole new generation
of jazz musicians. Scoring calls for 5th trumpet and
SATTB saxophones, however an optional alto sax
substitute part for soprano is included.

n Jody GrindHorace Silver/arr. John Clayton. The
funky stylings of Horace Silver are featured in this
energetic arrangement from the Clayton-Hamilton
Jazz Orchestra. A trumpet and tenor sax duet starts
it off, followed by ensemble punches and solos for
tenor and trombone. The entire ensemble gets into
the act as the chart roars to a climactic finish.

4 JoshuaVictor Feldman/arr. Mark Taylor.
Composed by pianist Victor Feldman, this jazz
standard has been popular with recording artists
ever since Miles Davis famously introduced it back
in 1963. Written in an up-tempo swing style and
featuring the riff-like melody surrounded by full
ensemble statements, this well-crafted chart is
certain to become a staple in the repertoire for jazz
groups. Highly recommended!

H Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!Jule
Styne/arr. Gordon Goodwin. In the style of Basie
and Hefti, this Gordon Goodwin adaptation of the
wonderful holiday classic is set in a medium swing
style. Not a drum showcase, but the drummer has
plenty of solo space beginning on brushes, then to
sticks as the intensity rises. There is a flute part on
second alto (can be omitted) and a percussion part
for vibes. The optional solo space is for alto, tenor,
trumpet, trombone, and the lead trumpet range is
to written high E. A great sax section soli rounds out
this excellent chart. This one is so nice, you'll want
to play it year 'round! Highly recommended!

l Letter from HomeThad Jones. Many of Thad
Jones' original compositions were recorded by the
Harry James Orchesta and this chart beautifully
illustrates how jones had such a unique talent
for writing within the established style of different
bands, while still managing to instill his own
musicality in each piece. This arrangement of Letter
from Home features a trumpet solo as played by
Harry James. There is also a piano solo and a nice
16-bar sax soli that is followed by a great shout
chorus. The instrumentation of this chart calls for
a trumpet soloist with the ensemble with a total of
five trumpets.

n A Little Minor BoozeWillie Maiden. This great
Kenton classic, as recorded on the album Live
from Redlands University, is a swinging, happy
chart which allows for lots of blowing space and
is combined with great ensemble sections. This
chart features the trombone section, with solos
for alto saxophone and trumpet. This is a revised,
cleaned-up version, done in Finale for the first time,
and it is finally correct and much easier to read. If
you have the older version lying around, you should
definitely consider getting this updated version.

l Lucked OutNicholas Fernandez. Lucked Out is
an up-tempo swing chart requiring a more mature
band. There are some challenging rhythm section
parts including an "open time" section in the middle
allowing them the opportunity to experiment with
time and feel, not the easiest concept to grasp.
Tenor sax is the featured soloist in this chart which
includes a suggested solo if the tenor player wants
to go in that direction. Possibilities abound with this
unique chart!

n Magic FleaSammy Nestico. This bright swing
original has served as a "rite of passage" for
many big bands. Sammy Nestico's style marking
of "moocho fasto" sets the pace for an exciting
ride through winding melodies and solidly scored
ensemble writing. Solo space is offered to tenor
saxophone and drums.

H Makin' WhoopeeWalter Donaldson/arr. Dave
Wolpe. Bass trombone players can count on one
hand the good charts available for their instrument.
Well, here is one of the best yet arranged by Dave
Wolpe in the style of the great George Roberts.
With a medium-swing feel, this showcase will
bring out the best in your bass trombone player
with no improvisation, just written melody. There is
some written or improvised jazz for 2nd trumpet in
harmon mute, and the lead trumpet has a unison
line to written high E. A nice sax soli is the icing on
the cake. An outstanding feature chart!

H Moanin'Charles Mingus/arr. Sy Johnson. This
is an awesome Mingus double-time swing chart in
the original version as recorded on the Mingus Big
Band 93 CD. It kicks off with a hot bari sax intro,
features some really tight licks, an extended open
solo section, and an infectious bari sax line that drives
the whole piece. Serious jazz for serious bands!

4 Moment's NoticeJohn Coltrane/arr. Alan
Baylock. Alan Baylock crafts a great swinger on
one of Coltrane's brilliant compositions. Set around
208 bpm, this chart includes solo space for alto
and tenor and a lead trumpet range to written high
C. A big shout chorus and sax soli complete the
package. Outstanding chart!

n OrnithologyParker & Harris/arr. Greg
Yasinitsky. Greg Yasinitsky has set Charlie Parker's
great bebop tune to swing at about 172 - 200
bpm. Featuring plenty of excellent sax section solis,
brass solis, solo spaces (suggested written solos
included) for tenor sax, and piano, this is fine big
band swing chart on a great tune. The lead trumpet
range goes up to written B-flat above the staff and
optional flute and vibraphone parts are included.
This is essential jazz repertoire, and this chart is
very highly recommended!

l PatienceFred Sturm. This original chart
commissioned and written by Fred Sturm features
drums throughout in this modern swing tune that
winds through many different feels. Utilizing both
brushes and sticks, this wonderful arrangement
features the drummer by providing interplay with
the ensemble and plenty of solo space. This is
a very clever and understated tune with quite
playable ensemble parts and beautiful writing
that will take your band and audiences on an
exhilarating musical journey!

l Re-Imagining the WorldDave Rivello.
Re-Imagining the World is a creative musical
voyage! With a Pat Metheny flavor, the work begins
with bari sax and band vocals trading back and
forth. Then the swing groove begins at 184 bpm
with a soaring ensemble featuring a trombone solo
and plenty of energy. An upbeat and exciting chart
perfect for concert, contest and festival!

Real Loud First Note BluesTom Kubis.
Composed by acclaimed jazz writer Tom Kubis, this
loose shuffle blues chart definitely lives up to its
name and is guaranteed to energize jazz ensembles
and their audiences. This chart is equally
appropriate as an opener, closer, or anything in
between. Solos are offered for trumpet 4, alto sax 2
and trombone 3, but the blues based changes allow
the solo section to be opened up so that any player
can be featured. After the solos there is an effective
and exciting shout chorus. Throughout this solidly
scored original there is tight ensemble and unison
writing in the tradition of Thad Jones. Infectious
rhythms such as triplet arpeggios give the lines
momentum. And, as expected, there is a rousing
finish as the band sounds two final chords. The
lead part for saxophones is soprano. A powerhouse
chart! Highly recommended!

tail off with the entire ensemble from beginning to end! Never has a sad song
