Jazz/Rock & Funk medium
n ChameleonHerbie Hancock/arr. Chris Sharp.
Herbie Hancock wrote this funky jazz standard
many years ago, but it still remains a player and
audience favorite with its hip bass line and hot
melody. This modern take on this funk classic
has plenty of room to get your groove on with
the famous melody. There's also room for soloing
over the friendly chord progression or breaking
it down with some very hip ensemble sections.
Don't miss the great passage where the rhythm
section drops out and the horns go it alone. Nice
chart on a great standard!

4 Cheep TricksKris Berg. Yep, you guessed it...
it's a funk chart! "The Chicken" tradition continues
at about 136 bpm. The funk groove is deep, the
solos are written out for tenor and/or guitar, and
the lead trumpet range is to a written A. Do you like
chicken? If so, you'll love this chart!

H The ChickenAlfred James Ellis/arr. Kris Berg. If
you've got a strong bassist, this is your showstopper!
This chart, made famous by bass virtuoso Jaco
Pastorius, gets kicking with a killer gospel chorale,
but is soon interrupted by one of the funkiest bass
lines ever played! Soon the entire band is in on it
with a Tower of Power-style sound that is sure to
impress everyone listening!

n Cold Duck TimeEddie Harris/arr. Erik Morales.
Eddie Harris' Cold Duck Time features a straight
eighth feel and a very hip opening intro lick. This
terrific chart is set in a funky, rock groove at about
132 - 144 bpm and has written or improvised solo
space for alto sax, bari sax, trumpet 2, and guitar.
The lead trumpet range is to written A above the
staff (with an optional B). This chart totally cooks!

H
Critical MassJeff Jarvis. Here's a chart that
everybody's gonna like! It's a straight-ahead funk
chart with an infectious beat, popping bass, cool
sax licks and hard brass pops. If you've tried
Jeff's other funk charts, you're going to want this
one. And if you haven't, you'd better get started!
Definitely a hip, groovin' tune that better bands will
get into!

n Crunchy FrogGordon Goodwin. Bass and
guitar kick off this original Gordon Goodwin
chart with a captivating rhythmic pattern
before the full ensemble settles in with the
funky melody. There's plenty of ensemble
writing, some in unison and some in harmony,
and solo space for all winds with suggested
or improv solos. The lead trumpet range goes
to written G-sharp on top of the staff, the tempo
is around 115 beats per minute, and optional
parts are included for expanded instrumentations.
This is accessible Gordon Goodwin material that
is right in the pocket for this grade level! Our
highest recommendation!

Cut the Cakearr. Mike Tomaro. Scottish funk
group Average White Band had two major hits that
helped solidify the horn-driven funk sound of the
'70s. Pick Up the Pieces was released in 1974
and Cut the Cake followed close behind in 1975.
Signature tunes with catchy horn licks that still
sound great today! Very cool!

4 Dirty DogRich Woolworth. This original funk
chart hits the sweet spot of grooviness that's just
right for high school jazz ensembles. The solo
section includes space for a tenor sax soloist with a
written or improvised solo before the rhythm section
drops out to feature the horns in a great a cappella
section. Once the rhythm section fires up again, it's
hard-driving funk to the end! Highly recommended!

4 Don't Steal My StuffGordon Goodwin. Gordon
Goodwin wrote this funky chart at the medium
grade level to showcase trumpet 1 and trombone 1.
Everything is written out including the melody duet,
the solos, and the featured trades. The tempo is
very accessible at 160 bpm, it's easy to assemble,
and it's fun to play!

l Don't Stop 'Til You Get EnoughMichael
Jackson/arr. Dallas Burke. This funky hit from
Michael Jackson's Off the Wall album translates into
a groovin' jazz chart everyone will enjoy. With lots of
tasty licks for the winds and very playable grooves for
the rhythm section, this chart is a winner!

Dusk to DawnMark Taylor. In sort of a
throwback style of slow funk, here is a skillfully
composed solo vehicle for alto sax. Rich harmonies
and an infectious groove help set the stage, and
with careful pacing and tight ensemble figures, this
makes an appealing change of pace for any concert
or festival. The solo is written with changes included
for improvisation as desired. Laidback and mellow!

n Everything in Its Right PlaceRadiohead/arr.
James Miley. Radiohead is an English alternative
rock band and James Miley's great arrangement
of one of their most popular recordings really works
well for big band. There is solo space for tenor
saxophone and this tune has a mesmerizing effect
on the listener...a very different piece indeed. The
brass ranges are reasonable and there are optional
parts for vibes and voice.

n Feather ReportKris Berg. With a distinct flavor
of the group Weather Report, writer Kris Berg
continues his successful string of chicken-related
jazz ensemble titles with Feather Report. This one
is definitely a superb chart with a hip-hop/shuffle-
swing kind of groove and a written tenor solo,
although other players can handle the simple two-
chord solo section. There are some meter changes
from 4 to 3 and back but nothing dangerous. The
lead trumpet range is to written A above the staff
(optional C). The brass players have a tough blow
in this one but it's worth the effort. Optional parts
are included for flute, horn in F, baritone/tenor sax
and tuba. Your band will get its groove on with no
"squawks" on this hot chart!

H Feels So GoodChuck Mangione/arr. Victor
Lopez. Only rarely does a jazz tune cross over to
the pop charts the way this Chuck Mangione classic
did back in the seventies! Flugelhorn solo on the
1st trumpet part is featured throughout with the
distinctive melody and then with a written or ad lib
solo along with a tenor solo. The flugelhorn solo
range is up to an optional written high C, but the
solo is cued on the 1st tenor part as well. Victor's
arrangement brings this contemporary gem within
the range of the developing trumpet player without
losing any of the hip appeal of the original. Here's
a perennially appealing, samba/rock chart that will
provide outstanding performance opportunities for
your band and soloist!

4 Funky StuffJoe Schaefer. There's lots of funky
fun in this cool chart that starts out featuring a
combo of alto sax, bari sax, trumpet, guitar and
trombone before the whole ensemble gets in on
the action. The solo section is designed for guitar
and tenor sax solos but can easily be opened up for
more soloists. The ranges are quite reasonable and
an optional flute part is included. Solid from start
to finish, jazz ensembles will leave a very strong
impression when they perform this understated and
smooth funk chart! Highly recommended!

n FunkythustraRichard Strauss/arr. Allen Gray.
Allen Gray's funk/rock treatment of Also Sprach
Zarathustra works as the perfect opener for your
next epic concert. Featuring plenty of room to feature
your ad lib soloists before recapping the theme, it's
sure to get your program off to a roaring start!

H Get It OnBill Chase/arr. Victor Lopez. This
chart is exciting jazz-rock...pure and simple!
From the jazz-rock group Chase, it features the
trumpet section and has written solos for tenor
sax, trumpet and trombone. The lead trumpet
range is to written Bb above the staff. There's
also a cool cascading chorale section. Optional
parts are included for flute, horn in F, baritone/
tenor sax and tuba. Hit it hard and keep the
energy pumping! Highly recommended!

H Gospel JohnJeff Steinberg/arr. Andy Clark.
Check out this incredible arrangement of Maynard
Ferguson's gospel favorite...it's hot as ever, but now
any high school with a decent trumpet player can
play it! Andy Clark's arrangement closely follows
Maynard's recorded version, except for a much
more playable introduction, new backgrounds for
the solos and some rewriting in the trumpet parts
(1st tpt. still goes to an "E"). This one is going to be
played for a long, long time! (Recorded on the CD
Uptown Stomp, #2378727)

chicken-themed groove at a tempo of 106 bpm.
The features include a written or ad-lib tenor sax
solo, an optional guitar solo and a lead trumpet
range to written B-flat. The chart also has optional

Williams/arr. Mike Tomaro. Mike Tomaro
makes sure that every section gets into the act

clapping by the band members while the
trombones carry the lead. The solo section is
open for anybody who happens to be in a happy
mood and wants to show it! Suggested solos

keys. Highly recommended!

recorded by Otis Redding in 1968, this hard-driving
R&B classic has become a mainstay of pop culture
covered by a wide range of artists including The

signature horn licks, powerful scoring, and a solo
for tenor sax. A suggested solo is included along

Mike Tomaro has transformed this into a sizzling
