simmering medium tempo, this distinctive funk
chart opens with the bass establishing the groove
gradually joined by the rest of the rhythm section. A
small combo of soprano sax, baritone sax, trumpet
and trombone takes the first statement followed by
the full ensemble on intricate unison lines as well as
tutti ensemble punches and riffs. The solo space is
reserved for tenor sax. Soprano sax is required.

composer Jeff Jarvis composed this tuneful funk
chart entitled Backdraft. This medium level chart
has all the characteristics of Jarvis' best selling
funk charts such as Critical Mass, Honk, Old
School, and Mohave Breakdown, and alternates
between 3/4 and 4/4 funk feels. Infectious piano
comping, punchy bass lines, and fun single-note
guitar comping support the catchy melody. The solo
section has accessible chord changes provided for
alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, trumpet, and
trombone. Guitar or piano can also join the solo
order if desired. As in most of Jarvis' offerings,
frequent articulations are provided for the horns
and the rhythm parts are an integral part of the
arrangement, not merely an afterthought. Everyone
has interesting and challenging parts to play
throughout. Highly recommended!

dynamic and fun chart and will be a real kick for
the band (especially the trumpets) and audience.

in a jazz language, orchestrated for big band, with

tempos and feels ranging from 76 to 304 bpm, to
styles including an a cappella sax soli introduction,

major work for jazz ensemble at 9 to 10 minutes
that students and players will want to work on. Solid

Wow, what a chart! This was one of Buddy
Rich's signature charts, and many know it from
the drum corps arrangement done by the Blue
Devils. Faithfully transcribed from the original, it's
challenging as "all get-out," but Tom Davis has
included some alternate trumpet parts to take out a
bit of the extreme upper register parts. Either way,
it's hot!

infectious charts that will make your audiences

the melody to feature alto and trumpet, and
there's solo space for alto, trumpet and tenor.
This chart comes to a roar at the end as the
full ensemble responds to the alto and trumpet
melody calls. A fresh must-have for your jazz
band library! Highly recommended!
