Los Angeles-based jazz composer Jeff Jarvis composed this tuneful funk chart entitled Backdraft. This medium level chart has all the characteristics of Jarvis' best selling funk charts such as Critical Mass, Honk, Old School, and Mohave Breakdown, and alternates between 3/4 and 4/4 funk feels. Infectious piano comping, punchy bass lines, and fun single-note guitar comping support the catchy melody. The solo section has accessible chord changes provided for alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, trumpet, and trombone. Guitar or piano can also join the solo order if desired. As in most of Jarvis' offerings, frequent articulations are provided for the horns and the rhythm parts are an integral part of the arrangement, not merely an afterthought. As performed by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, here's a showcase for the trumpet section! The groove is straight eighths with a funky feel and there's solo space for all trumpets, but the solos can be tailored as desired. The lead trumpet range is to a written high G with an optional A. Yes, this is for real! MA 58.00 Channel One SuiteBill Reddie/arr. Tom Davis. Wow, what a chart! This was one of Buddy Rich's signature charts, and many know it from the drum corps arrangement done by the Blue Devils. Faithfully transcribed from the original, it's challenging as "all get-out," but Tom Davis has included some alternate trumpet parts to take out a bit of the extreme upper register parts. Originally recorded by Cannonball Adderley on his album Domination, Cyclops is one of those infectious charts that will make your audiences bob their heads, tap their feet, and snap their fingers! This tune grooves! Set as a medium- slow funky boogaloo, Oliver Nelson scores the melody to feature alto and trumpet, and there's solo space for alto, trumpet and tenor. This chart comes to a roar at the end as the full ensemble responds to the alto and trumpet melody calls. A fresh must-have for your jazz band library! The masters of funk, Tower of Power, are as relevant and active today as ever before, and their hit from the '70s features a moderate groove with an occasional 7/8 measure thrown in for kicks.
