Original Concert Works medium-easy
Daylight BreakingDeborah Baker Monday.
This powerful and descriptive piece has a cinematic
sound quality. Using a variety of expressions and
contrasts, it portrays that moment when darkness
gives way to light on the distant horizon, starting
with a glimmer and eventually bursting into
a brilliant sky to mark the start of a new day.
Gorgeously inspiring!

Dies Irae: FantasiaDeborah Baker Monday.
The familiar strains of this ancient hymn have been
adeptly set in this freely composed fantasia. The
independent parts combine well to create a piece
that is an excellent choice for concert or contest.

n Dotonbori DashAlan Lee Silva. This work
illustrates an adventurous chase through the
Dotonbori Market, a lively and colorful marketplace
in Osaka, Japan. As the caper traverses in and out
of doorways and through packed crowds, each
section of the orchestra gets a prime opportunity
to display their skills on either long, cascading
melodies or contemporary bassline parts. The col
legno and slapping effects enhance the rhythms
and texture. A high energy piece that builds to a
rousing conclusion!
10308922 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . 55.00
n Double TroubleLauren Bernofsky. Here's a
punchy teaching tune to make the key of D come
to life! All the voices have fun with the edgy and
rhythmic eighth note "double trouble" motif.
Emphasis on accents and tight ensemble playing
will make this a class favorite!

n Dragon DancesSoon Hee Newbold. Here's
a very creative and exciting work with an exotic
Far-Eastern sound. First the upper strings create
anticipation with an ostinato pattern that continues
as the lower strings present the main melody.
Later, a quiet pizzicato section by all players brings
to mind the sound of oriental stringed instruments.
This is an excellent work that is suited for all players
at the easy to medium easy level.

l Dragonflies and GlitterKirk Vogel/ed. J.
Cameron Law. The composer was inspired to write
this piece for a former student who disappeared
while trekking in Nepal. As reflected in this uplifting
work for strings and light percussion, the student
was a free spirit and spread her kindness and
generosity liberally. Dragonflies and glitter were
two things that she loved and have become rallying
symbols for family and friends who dearly hope for
the day of her safe return.

DragonflyDoug Spata. Like a dragonfly flitting
through the air, sixteenth-note runs dart across
shifting meters, passing between sections before
landing firmly. The accompaniment buzzes with
intensity as dark themes emerge from the lower
voices (reaching down to the C strings of the cellos
and violas) and settle into a languid glide, only
to fly again into a furious conclusion. Precision,
musicianship, and ensemble skills are at the
forefront of this exhilarating G minor selection. Sure
to dazzle audiences and young musicians alike!

4 Electric SinfoniaLauren Bernofsky. Hop
onboard with this red-hot piece that includes hints
of rock music. Musicians hit the ground running
as aggressive lines contrast with longer, sweeping
phrases. Perfect for building confidence in your
group, individual parts are quite easy to play — but
when you put everything together, the group will
sound sensational!

EleganteSusan H. Day. As the title suggests,
this piece offers an opportunity for players to create
a rich and elegant sound by using long, full bows
with slurred note passages. Written in 3/4 time
using the keys of C and D, the piece includes a
short solo section to allow your 1st chair players to
shine. A beautiful piece for developing expressive
playing in your group!

Eureka!Keith Sharp. Full of joy and optimistic
feeling, this original piece presents two contrasting
themes. Moving from the initial rhythmic, fiddle-
style section into the warm lyricism of an old Celtic
air and back to the rhythmic theme, all parts are
musically engaging and encourage cohesive energy
in the ensemble. Some syncopation, some third
position for the 1st violins, and rapid string crossing
figures provide just the right amount of challenge.
Clever bow technique and fun, rolled into one!

n The Evil Eye and the Hideous HeartAlan Lee
Silva. Based on the classic Edgar Allan Poe short
story "The Tell-Tale Heart," this work is reminiscent
of a classic Hollywood horror movie theme. The
piano and optional harp and percussion parts
punctuate the tension and suspense that is felt
from the first note to the last. The basses act as the
low, ominous threat of danger, and the upper voices
represent the insanity of the main character's
twisted plan. A real thriller!

l The ExplorersKeith Sharp. This stirring
piece depicts determined explorers enjoying new
discoveries. All sections share the majestic theme,
and the middle section chorale encourages a warm,
sustained tone.

H
Fantasia for StringsElliot Del Borgo. This
fine work begins in a vigorous style, followed by
a contrasting melodic statement and an energetic
reprise. An excellent selection for developing strings.

Fantasia on a Theme from ThailandRichard
Meyer. This captivating work is a set of variations
on the Pong Lang dance, one of Thailand's most
popular melodies. The pong lang is a suspended
vertical wooden xylophone whose keys are
arranged upside down, with the low notes on the
upper end and the high notes at the bottom. The
melody uses the pentatonic scale and is very simple
in nature. The variations expand on fragments of
the original tune in a variety of tempi and styles
that make each new change thrilling! After this
exploration, the original melody returns, gradually
gaining speed and energy as one would hear in a
traditional performance of this dance.

H
Fantasia on an Original ThemeJoseph
Phillips. This is a poignant and distinctively Irish-
flavored fantasia in a cantabile style. Violists will
love the opening soli introduction that is quite
beautiful. A very nice piece at the intermediate level.

4 A Fiddler's FancyRichard Meyer. Full of
educational opportunities for every section, this
two-movement work has an old-fashioned folk
music sound. Wisteria Waltz is lush and legato
while Fig's Frolic is patterned after the energy of a
cute but hungry little dog. Two contrasting gems!

Firelight, CandlelightRobert Sieving. A
programmatic work, this evocative original piece
features a sensitive melody and warm harmonies
that will remind audiences of a cozy hearth in
wintertime. The melodic style and contemporary
harmonies suggest a time when gatherings of
friends and families are remembered with pleasure
and a particular kind of American nostalgia for days
gone by.

energetic original by Ralph Ford is full of exciting

n Ice SculpturesBrian Balmages. This lyrical
work draws its inspiration from ice hotels;
temporary hotels made entirely of ice and snow.
Strong elements of film scoring prevail throughout
the work as it tells the story of the construction,
visitors, and eventual melting of the hotel. Feature
both your cello soloist and cello section in this
unique work that will captivate your audience!

Ides of MarchSean O'Loughlin. Pulse-pounding
and haunting are two very distinct characteristics in
this dramatic composition for string orchestra. The
music starts with a haunting three-note idea that
permeates the entire composition. Different elements
get added to the core motif to increase its complexity
as the piece progresses. There are staccato patterns
and long swells of lyrical lines, all while the underlying
rhythm is maintained. This exhilarating piece is one of
which you need not be wary!

l If It Ain't Baroque, Don't Fix ItMatt Turner.
What would happen if Bach had lived in the time of
rock and roll? This piece might have been the result!
There is plenty of musical depth to this piece, and yet
it has both Baroque and rock style at the same time.
There is even an opportunity for some improvisation.
10457549 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . 50.00
n IlluminationBob Lipton/ed. Law. Don't be
fooled by the gentle opening statement - this is
hard rock for strings! Inspiration for this selection
came from hair bands of the '80s, although its
well-arranged for string ensemble. There is even
a power ballad section in the middle for good
measure. Rock on!

n Jubilant OvertureJoshua Reznicow. Scored
for a full sound, this concert opener is just what
the title indicates. Its syncopated themes, bright
tempos and sophisticated scoring will energize
your string orchestra. The middle lyrical section
flows gently and beautifully before returning to the
original theme. Nice!

Keltic FeastRichard Meyer. This Celtic tour de
force runs the gamut of emotions. An aggressively
rustic opening makes way for a joyful and catchy
original jig followed by a legato setting of the
beautiful folk tune Sheebeg and Sheemore,
introduced by the violas. The jig returns, and is soon
combined with the folk tune, creating a delightful
contrapuntal conversation between low and high
strings. This will be a challenge for every section
of your string orchestra, but the rewards are well
worth the effort to present this in your next contest
or festival!

l KingsfoldTraditional/arr. David Marlatt. This
beautiful folk song has been used as the melody for
several popular hymns. It opens with a solo violin with
a sense of a lone player on the top of a hill surrounded
by mist followed by full quartet voicing before leading
to other variations and rescorings. It finally ends as it
began, very peacefully and reflectively.
