String
Orchestra
Christmas & Holiday medium to advanced
O Holy NightAdolphe Charles Adam/arr. Turner.
An enchanting young ensemble arrangement of this
beautiful classic! Written in 3/4, it begins with a
solo cello delicately accompanied by upper strings,
evolving majestically into the full string orchestra
angelically singing praises. An optional percussion
part is included for added effect. Stunning!

n Pat-A-Panarr. Chip Davis & Robert Longfield.
From the acclaimed CD Christmas in the Aire, this
string version of the holiday favorite Pat-a-Pan
features an energetic style with an underlying
light rock foundation. Continuing the Mannheim
Steamroller tradition of creative, contemporary
settings, this is an attractive program piece for a
holiday program.

l Riu, Riu, Chiuarr. David Marlatt. This lesser-
known Christmas carol dating from around 1550 is
rhythmic and colorful, with melody in several voices.
The opening is a call and response between the
solo cello and the remainder of the group. There is
some fast bow work, but the piece is not too difficult
for a group to put together.

n Rudolph, the Red Nosed ReindeerJohnny
Marks/arr. Morales. This is a great way to begin
a holiday concert! It's an energetic rendition of the
Christmas favorite with a Latin flavor to it. Percussive
staccato bowing imitates a "clave rhythm" as the
melody gets passed from section to section.

4 Silent NightFranz Xavier Gruber/arr. Erik
Morales. This breathtaking arrangement may quite
possibly be the highlight of your winter program.
Lush harmonies support a gorgeous presentation of
the melody that goes through a series of haunting
and magical settings. There are also several
opportunities to feature your principal violinist.

Suite of CarolsLeroy Anderson. Play one,
a few, or all six of these fantastically arranged
carols! It's rich, full string writing as only Anderson
can do it. Selections include: Pastores a Belen; It
Came Upon the Midnight Clear; O Little Town of
Bethlehem; Bring a Torch Jeanette, Isabella; Away
in a Manger and Wassail Song. Higher positions are
used often in the first violins and occasionally in the
cellos, but all sections have their moments to shine.
Your students will rise to the challenge because this
music is well worth the effort!

Three Minute NutcrackerP.I. Tchaikovsky/arr.
Conley. A clever, light-hearted finish to your holiday
program! With the never ending goal to keep the
concert short, here's the essence (nine themes) of
the classic ballet, honed down to three minutes or
less. Stage it with a big hourglass-type egg timer,
or with a projected digital stopwatch and let the
audience watch as your orchestra works toward
the finish. For added drama, there's an optional
accelerando (molto, if need be) in the Trepak finale,
to bring it in under the wire.

n Troika (from "Lieutenant Kije")Sergei
Prokofiev/arr. Lavender. Ideal for a classical-style
piece for your holiday program, Prokofiev's sleigh
ride is an energetic, familiar tune that translates
wonderfully for string orchestra. Paul Lavender's
setting is scored to feature your viola and cello
sections, and includes some performance options
to best suit your ensemble's level.

4 We Three KingsJohn Henry Hopkins, Jr./arr.
Sean O'Loughlin. Advanced ensembles don't want
to waste their time on simplistic holiday music, and
now they don't have to! This setting of the popular
carol is highly stylized and musically sophisticated.
A welcome addition to the repertoire lists of more
advanced groups.

Wenceslas Takes a Sleigh RideJames
Curnow. Here's a new twist, combining a traditional
English carol with a festive, contemporary style that
makes a nice blend of new and old. The mixture of
key centers and creative scoring make it a super
choice for your holiday concert!

4 Winter PalacePaul O'Neill/arr. Bob Phillips.
Perfectly set for strings and true to the original stage
show, this piece will be greatly enhanced by adding
a rhythm section and electric instruments, but can
be played by strings alone.

4 Winterfestarr. Victor Lopez. This medley is
a true holiday treat. Includes: Lo, How a Rose
E'er Blooming; The Holly and the Ivy, and Break
Forth, O Beauteous, Heavenly Light. A lovely
setting of Christmas carols that will complete
your winter program!
