Koneko uses a simple pentatonic tune to depict the innocent and playful nature of a little kitten. The piece uses very limited musical and technical material for the players. The pentatonic tune begins with the first violins only, and then the tutti orchestra. A secondary theme is added with the celli taking the lead line. Different variations of the main tune are developed, and the lower strings get a chance with some important melodic material.
