The work begins with a moderately paced main theme and folk-like harmonies. The piece then slows down a bit as the rickshaw driver takes a brief rest. But then it's time to get back on the street as the original tempo returns. A frantic presto concludes the piece as the operator runs to get his rider to their destination on time. Based on Thomas Moore's famous song The Minstrel Boy, this work uses the full gamut of styles and techniques, from bagpipe drones to lyrical playing and even fiddle music. The work is composed of three variations that run together seamlessly. The first variation presents the entire tune, much more upbeat than it is usually performed. The second, lyrical section is absolutely beautiful and offers an opportunity for working on musicianship and phrasing without overextending the group technically. The final section is fiddle music and takes the audience on a thrill ride that builds to a glorious conclusion.
