African AdventureRobert Sheldon. When
it comes time to celebrate the musical colors of
Africa, combine forces with your string group and
percussion ensemble on this stylish concert work
for the developing ensemble. Repetitive rhythms
and a catchy melodic hook propel the piece
forward as it develops momentum and dramatic
flair. Substitute Orff instruments for the melodic
percussion for an even more authentic timbre.
A guaranteed favorite!

American Fiddle Triptycharr. Tim McCarrick.
This medley of three fantastic folk fiddle tunes, set
in a totally authentic style, will delight players and
audiences. Arkansas Traveler; Fire on the Mountain
and Devil's Dream are featured in the violins and
violas with great accompaniment parts for the cellos
and basses. Highly Recommended!

H
Ashokan Farewell (from The Civil War)arr.
Calvin Custer. The simple, memorable theme from
the acclaimed PBS series makes excellent concert
fare. Calvin Custer's realistic treatment includes
the easy violin solo, piano and percussion. This is
technically quite easy, but very emotional.
2238723 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . 53.00
n Blackberry BlossomGary Gackstatter. Feature
your top player on this famous American tune!
The first time through, the soloist takes the lead
accompanied by some pizzicato and the occasional
foot stomp. The second time though, first violins
play most of the tune along with the soloist. The
third and final time through the soloist gets some
nice variations on the tune. And, oh yes, the faster
the better!
2702541 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . 48.00
n Blue Fire FiddlerSoon Hee Newbold. Energetic,
exciting and fun, are the words that best describe
this kickin' fiddle tune. This fast and furious fiddling
piece sounds much harder than it really is. Riffs,
finger patterns and bowings are very idiomatic and
lend themselves to fast playing. This is sure to be
the hit of the concert!

Bluegrass Fiddle FrenzyBill Monroe/arr.
Phillips. In celebration of Bill Monroe's 100th
birthday, perform this high energy, true blue
arrangement of Scotland and Big Mon, two of
Monroe's standards. Scotland evokes memories
of the Scottish roots of Appalachian music leading
into the technical wizardy of the tune named for the
"Father of Bluegrass" himself.

Celtic ForceSteve Frackenpohl. This driving
medley contains four hard-hitting Irish fiddle
tunes arranged in a Celtic rock style. Students and
audiences will enjoy the nonstop momentum of this
exciting piece.

H
Danny Boyarr. Harry Alshin. Lovely,
interweaving countermelodies create a rich
inner texture in this beautiful arrangement of the
timeless love song. Sensibly placed in the key of D
Major, this beautiful arrangement will have lasting
appeal with your students and audiences, and will
be an especially good choice for combined festival
orchestra performance. Gorgeous! Recorded by
Michigan State University Orchestra on the CD,
Teaching Music Through Performance in Orchestra
Volume 1 - Pepper #5973728.

Danny Rocks (A Celtic Explosion)Bob
Phillips. A trio of terrific tunes! An air, a jig, and
a reel done in a Celtic rock style! The plaintive
sounds of Danny Boy, also known as Londonderry
Air starts things off. Next, the Swallowtail jig
begins with an intense rhythmic pattern where
6/8 clashes with 3/4 and what sounds like a
Bodhran (Irish hand drum) is actually half the
cello section using their instruments for rhythm!
Following that rollicking jig is a very suspenseful
20-bar transition leading to the very popular
reel, Drowsy Maggie. The energy level rises
throughout and the rock beat intensifies making
this a great concert closer!
10032751 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . 55.00
Donegal Fiddlesarr. Tim McCarrick.
"Authentic" is the word for this! It features two
reels from County Donegal, The Boys of Malin
and The Gravel Walks, both of which are played
often in Ireland. The style is brisk and exciting.
All the players get great parts, from the basses
imitating the Irish hand drum to cello and viola
features in the first tune, to the violins playing in
unison or octaves, racing to the end. Performed
separately or as a set, it's a terrific opener or
encore number! Highly recommended!
10280090 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . 45.00
n Dotonbori DashAlan Lee Silva. This work
illustrates an adventurous chase through the
Dotonbori Market, a lively and colorful marketplace
in Osaka, Japan. As the caper traverses in and out
of doorways and through packed crowds, each
section of the orchestra gets a prime opportunity
to display their skills on either long, cascading
melodies or contemporary bassline parts. The col
legno and slapping effects enhance the rhythms
and texture. A high energy piece that builds to a
rousing conclusion!
10308922 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . 55.00
Ear IgamiRichard Meyer. Ear-igami is a
fascinating musical tribute to the ancient Japanese
art of paper folding. Instead of a bow, each
performer uses a piece of paper to make sounds
and to "play" their instrument. Your audience will
be entranced as they watch and hear the variety of
effects possible in this charming set of pentatonic
variations. Premiered by the composer's middle
school orchestra, this music is sure to intrigue high
school and adult musicians as well. There's nothing
else like it!
10066927 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . 55.00
Fantasia on a Theme from ThailandRichard
Meyer. This captivating work is a set of variations
on the Pong Lang Dance, one of Thailand's most
popular melodies. The pong lang is a suspended
vertical wooden xylophone whose keys are
arranged upside down, with the low notes on the
upper end and the high notes at the bottom. The
melody uses the pentatonic scale and is very simple
in nature. The variations expand on fragments of
the original tune in a variety of tempi and styles
that make each new change thrilling! After this
exploration, the original melody returns, gradually
gaining speed and energy as one would hear in a
traditional performance of this dance.
10015211 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . 48.00
n Folk Tune and Fiddle DancePercy Fletcher.
A long-time favorite for festival and contest, Percy
Fletcher's two-movement suite has been a choice
teaching piece for school orchestras. In true English
folk style, the first movement has multiple sections
in varying styles and meters, and the second
movement is rhythmic, energetic fiddle writing at
its best.

n Hatikvah (from "Munich")John Williams.
Here is the authentic edition direct from John
Williams and exactly as played in the film. Although
this is the original film music, it is understated and
remains at the medium easy level. The string parts
contain lots of divisi writing and there are parts for
optional flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and harp.
John Williams' treatment of the Israeli national
anthem gives a special reverence and power to this
beloved hymn.

This authentic and energetic arrangement of
the Hebrew folk song uses a solo quintet and
percussion instruments to expand the palette of the
traditional string orchestra. Percussion instruments
used include bells, timpani, tambourine and
suspended cymbal. This arrangement comes
highly recommended!

The Irish Bakerarr. Robert Longfield. The
traditional American folk and bluegrass favorite
Angelina Baker is cleverly arranged in an Irish
dance style for strings. Great fiddle melodies
accompanied by drone harmony make it fun to
teach and play.

Keltic FeastRichard Meyer. This Celtic tour de
force runs the gamut of emotions. An aggressively
rustic opening makes way for a joyful and catchy
original jig followed by a legato setting of the
beautiful folk tune Sheebeg and Sheemore,
introduced by the violas. The jig returns, and is soon
combined with the folk tune, creating a delightful
contrapuntal conversation between low and high
strings. This will be a challenge for every section
of your string orchestra, but the rewards are well
worth the effort to present this in your next contest
or festival!

Krambambuliarr. Sandra Dackow. An old
silly song, this tune should be performed with the
feeling of a rowdy party! Every section has well-
written parts that will provide plenty of learning
opportunities. A fun, light addition to any concert.

n Las PalmasBob Lipton. Fiery original melodies
take center stage in this spicy selection. One group
of students will be assigned to clap authentic
Flamenco rhythms, while the rest of the orchestra
plays with the flair of a traditional Spanish
ensemble. Highly entertaining!

This hauntingly beautiful setting of an English
folksong is so good, it is reminiscent of Vaughan
Williams. A heartfelt melody with a halo of
countermelodies on high strings, it is simply
luscious! Highly recommended!

l Mexican Hat DanceJesus Gonzalez Rubio/arr.
J. Cameron Law. Written in the 1800s, it is danced
by a man and a woman with lots of stomping and
heel tapping, while wearing traditional Mexican
outfits. The man flings his sombrero (Mexican
hat) to the ground, and the couple dances
enthusiastically around it. The performance often
ends with a kiss. The Mexican Hat Dance is a
favorite of Mariachi bands and is considered the
national folk dance of Mexico.

Mock Morris (English Country Dance)Percy
Grainger/arr. Giardiniere. The morris dance
has been performed throughout the English
countryside since the time of William Shakespeare.
Percy Grainger was so taken by the form that he
wrote his own melodies for the dance, with great
success. Now your developing players can feel
the joy with this sparkling arrangement, which has
lots of pizzicato texture to convey the merry, bright
feeling. It's guaranteed to get the toes tapping in
your audience! Highly recommended!
