4 St. James Infirmary—arr. Mike Collins-
Dowden. This chart provides younger jazz
ensembles with the opportunity to pay homage to
one of the most historic jazz tunes. Starting with
a slow and bluesy dirge featuring your trumpet,
the chart picks up into a nice, medium tempo
swing and features an open solo section before
returning to the New Orleans dirge feel featuring
the trumpet soloist once more. With limited
brass ranges and accessible rhythms, this is a
great historic chart for young jazz bands!

Struttin' with Some Barbecue—arr. Rick
Stitzel. Here's a fresh take on one of the all-
time standards of early jazz composed by Lillian
Hardin Armstrong and Don Raye, and made
famous by Louis Armstrong. There's a hint of old
time jazz style mixed in with a more traditional
straight-ahead swing feel. Playable with optional
reduced or expanded instrumentations, this is
a great way to introduce a bit of jazz history
with a chart that's also fun to play.

H Take the 'A' Train—Billy Strayhorn/arr. Vince
Gassi. This chart swings all the way and is very
playable by a young jazz ensemble. Arranger
Vince Gassi offers a fresh take on this classic,
yet captures the essence of this well-known
Strayhorn composition made famous by
Ellington. It's scored exactly right for younger
players... not too difficult but with fun-to-
play parts. With brief written solos for 1st alto
sax and 1st trumpet, and easy ranges, it also
has plenty of dynamics to teach. A superb
chart you will play for years to come! Optional
reduced or expanded instrumentation.

4 702 Shuffle—Bret Zvacek. Need a great
opener or a burning closer? 702 Shuffle can
take care of either spot on the program! With
a strong melody, an infectious groove and solid
ensemble work, this Bret Zvacek composition
will fit well into any program. The open solo
section allows for plenty of room for your
soloist to stretch out with the provided solo or
improvisation. Highly recommended!

H Abracadabra—Larry Barton. The magic
of this slinky swinger will put your audience
under a spell! The lead wind players start
things out on the head, but before long the
full band is jamming along. It's an "in your
face" chart that's all about attitude!
2472521 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . 45.00
H Autumn Leaves—Joseph Kosma/arr. Peter
Blair. This is a great old tune! Except...there's
nothing "old" sounding about it. It's a medium
swing version of a marvelous, often-played
standard that opens with an alto and trumpet
duet and is filled with tight ensemble punches.
The saxes are featured on a chorus and there is
a written or ad lib solo for piano.

Back to the Basement—Bret Zvacek. More
experienced groups know that a swing chart
by Bret Zvacek will be both well-written and
exciting to play. As this chart demonstrates, he
is also adept at writing charts at the medium-
easy level. This sizzling shuffle chart is a great
teaching vehicle. This accessible, melodic blues
swinger features nice ensemble passages,
written or improvised solos, and gets very
exciting in the last chorus. Great melody,
great ensemble writing, great chart!

Bauduc/arr. Paul Lavender. Bring the sounds of

4 Big Swing Face—Bill Potts/arr. Rich Sigler.
This chart, originally popularized by Buddy
Rich, has been scored at an accessible level
while maintaining the essence of the original and
more. The tempo is around 154 bpm, there are
written solos for tenor and trumpet 2, as well as
nice dynamics to show off your jazz band, plus

4 Bringin' Down the House—Larry Neeck.
The title says it all! This bright, accessible
swinger features hip unison riffs, cool sax
solis and powerhouse ensemble sections.
Built on the blues form, this is a great chart for
teaching the swing style, and a real band and
crowd pleaser. An optional open solo section
includes suggested written solos or players
can improvise, and the shout chorus builds
gradually to a blockbuster finish. For your next
concert or contest performance, Bringin' Down
The House is a very strong choice!

4 Count Me In (Edited Version)—Billy Byers.
Much like Basie's Li'l Darlin', this Billy Byers
compostion exemplifies quiet, warm ensemble
writing at its finest. There is also the contrast of
a strong shout section before returning to the
quieter approach. This was recorded by the
Count Basie Orchestra on the album Count
Basie's Finest Hour. Set in a medium-slow
swing feel, there are solos for trumpet and
piano. In this edited version, the arrangement
is almost exactly like the original, except
the solos are written out, the high trumpet
parts are adjusted, and the saxophone parts
have been somewhat simplified.

4 Don't Get Around Much Anymore—Ellington
& Russell/arr. Mark Taylor. One of the classic
trademark tunes from the Duke Ellington library,
this familiar jazz standard is solidly scored for
younger players by Mark Taylor. When it comes
to accessible charts in a medium swing style, this
one can't be beat! Highly recommended!
10427404 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . 45.00
Hurricane Season—Troy Andrews/arr.
John Wasson. From the Trombone Shorty CD
Backatown, this tune features the powerful
underlying pulse of a New Orleans second
line feel. In this exciting chart, the ensemble
alternately screams with the full band riffs,
then settles into a simmering rhythmic groove.
A real treat to perform and hear!
10490297 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . 45.00
I'm Beginning to See the Light—arr.
Paul Baker. This is a swinger all the way!
The tempo can be anywhere between 132
- 150 bpm and there is a written trumpet 2
solo. There's plenty of swingin' ensemble, a
great sax section soli plus optional parts for
flute, clarinet, vibes, horn, baritone horn, and
tuba. Add in trumpet plungers and sliding
trombones and it's all great stuff!
10353493 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . 44.00
H In a Mellow Tone—Duke Ellington/arr. Mark
Taylor. One of the all-time Duke Ellington
classics is this elegant, medium swing tune. Mark
Taylor's smooth arrangement for developing
groups features plenty of rich ensemble scoring
plus written or ad lib solos for trumpet and
trombone. Introduce your young jazzers to
the Duke with this excellent chart!
2481663 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . 45.00
H Jumpin' at the Woodside—Count Basie/arr.
Rich DeRosa. This one just builds and builds!
Rich DeRosa keeps this Count Basie signature
tune swinging all the way and includes two
optional tag endings to keep the Basie style
intact. The solos are written out for piano,
tenor sax, trumpet and trombone and the
lead trumpet range is to written G on top of
the staff with an A on the optional tag ending.
Optional parts are included for expanded
instrumentation. One of the Count's finest!
10028198 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . 46.00
4 The Mudbug Strut—Paul Baker. A New
Orleans street parade comes to life with this
chart! A 2nd line snare drum beat drives the
Dixie-based ensemble, complete with tailgate
trombone. There are written solos for trombone,
alto sax, plunger trumpet, and bass, and tuba
may be substituted for the bass for even
more authenticity. An additional clarinet part
is included as well. An exchange between the
drums and ensemble leads to a roll off that
launches the shout section and traditional
ending. The trumpet range goes to written high G
and trombone to F. Highly recommended!
10458467 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . 40.00
H Sing, Sing, Sing—Louie Prima/arr. Victor
Lopez. Yep, this is the Sing, Sing, Sing you
know and love, made famous by Gene Krupa
and the Benny Goodman Orchestra, only
arranged for young players by Victor Lopez.
The classic drum solo that can be opened
up for as much excitement as the crowd can
stand, along with a written-out tenor solo,
reasonable brass ranges and lots of meaty
ensembles keep this great chart exciting. It will
also sound full with reduced instrumentation or
with the optional, non-jazz band parts. It's still a
showstopper! Highly recommended!
