Air in D (from Orchestral Suite No. 3)
J.S. Bach/arr. William H. Mathis. Suggested for
13 ringers and printed in a nontraditional 4-staff
format, Air in D is a creative setting of the J. S.
Bach favorite. The bottom staff is for the malleted
bass line, mimicking pizzicato cello; the middle two
staves carry the rest of the accompaniment on
chimes; and the top staff is the melody for a few
ringers or solo instrument. Air in D would be a lovely
addition to any worship service, wedding ceremony
or concert venue.

Giusto Con VivoMichael J. Glasgow.
Commissioned by Handbell Musicians of America
Area 8 for the June 2014 "Ring Davenport" festival,
this original work takes its name from the marking
"Tempo Giusto," meaning "the proper tempo."
Marts, mallets, thumb-damps, shakes, echoes,
and chimes all add interest and help the ringers
play it "con vivo" (with life), much to the delight
of their listeners, particularly in massed festival
settings. The fanfare introduction yields lighthearted
melodies which use parallel major and minor keys,
and the powerful ending drives it home with flair.

Passacaglia in C minor (Built on the Sure
Foundation)Fred Gramann. The term
'passacaglia' refers to a set of variations over a
repeating bass line, commonly in triple meter. This
original work by Fred Gramann explores a variety
of handbell textures and techniques, building
from a simple melody to more complex patterns.
Precise, delicate ringing is required, with pluck
and swings to help build momentum. Being built
on a foundational bass line, an alternative title for
worship might be Built on the Sure Foundation.
