In a throwback to the jazz-influenced R&B style of the late 1970s, here is a driving samba/ funk version of this George Duke hit. Featuring a pair of trombones and tenor saxes at the top, this chart builds energy throughout with carefully crafted interplay between all sections of the ensemble. Suggested or ad lib solos are featured for alto, trombone, bass and piano. Also included are written- out bass lines and piano voicings. Nice groove! 10522900 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . MA 55.00 4 Cannonball RunGordon Goodwin. Here's the full big-band version of Gordon Goodwin's Cannonball Run! It's a high-energy Latin/pop cooker that moves along at a pretty good clip, around 240 bpm. The saxophone lead is soprano instead of alto, the lead trumpet range is written to high F, and there's solo space for all saxes, trumpet 4, and trombones 1 and 2. A hot sax section soli and some counterpoint round out this cannonball. Very hot stuff! 10513952 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . A 72.00 l Captain MarvelChick Corea/arr. Mike Tomaro. This jazz fusion classic by Chick Corea was recorded by Stan Getz in 1972 and also by Chick Corea with his group Return to Forever on the landmark album Light as a Feather. In this exciting version for mature jazz ensembles, Mike Tomaro retains the highly energetic samba feel of the original while adding some creative touches of his own. With the opportunity for an extended alto sax solo, this Rolls Royce of an arrangement is definitely top-notch! 2402725 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . MA 60.00 n Cuban OvertureGeorge Gershwin/arr. Chris Sharp. A serious work adapted from the symphonic poem composed by George Gershwin, arranger Chris Sharp has accepted the challenge to create this amazing arrangement for big band. This chart is a primarily a bright samba but it has a slow middle section which reverts to the fiery samba groove. The written or improvised solo space is for alto 1 and trumpet 2 and the lead trumpet range is to D above the staff. A percussion part is included as well. This is a brilliant arrangement and will certainly be a high point in any concert or festival performance. 10277947 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . A 55.00 Cubauza!Michael Philip Mossman. This exciting Afro-Cuban composition is the opening cut from the 1993 album 944 Columbus, the final recoding by Mario Bauza, one of the most influential figures in the development of Latin jazz. The title comes from combining the words "Cuban" and "Bauza" and features a bebop influence interpreted by the Afro-Cuban rhythm section. This newly edited and engraved edition is a "must have" for mature bands. 10282975 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . A 60.00 Eleanor RigbyLennon & McCartney/arr. Eric Richards. Commissioned by the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors, this Eric Richards chart shines new light on the beauty and depth of this classic Beatles hit. An up-tempo Brazilian groove gives way to hints of samba and songo, but always with a smooth and laid-back feel. A piano solo is featured off the top, followed by a trio of tenor, trombone and guitar on the head, and later solo space for one or more of these players. A brief nod to the classical feel of the original Beatles track helps build to a climatic shout for the full ensemble. Nice! 10343782 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . A 60.00 l Fiesta MojoDizzy & Lorraine Gillespie/arr. Mark Taylor. From Dizzy Gillespie's Afro-Cuban stylistic period, here is his delightfully infectious Fiesta Mojo set in a bouncy medium samba groove. A small group (including optional flute) starts things off, supported by colorful muted brass figures. There are written or ad lib solo opportunities for tenor, trumpet, and alto, along with a soli section for the saxes, and a full ensemble unison chorus helps to spice things up! 10522902 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . MA 55.00 n Free Food?Rick Hirsch. An ode to ducks, of course, this chart is a funny, catchy, good-humored Calypso in C minor. With 16-bar solos scored for several players, it's a great vehicle for featuring a handful of soloists, and much more interesting than endless blues choruses. Also featured are robust sax and trombone solis along with a fun and clever ending. Oh, and don't forget the trumpet mouthpiece "quacks!" 10192238 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . MA 52.00 n Gentle RainLuiz Bonfa/arr. Kris Berg. A wonderful tune with rich textures and voicings, Gentle Rain is a solo vehicle for C, B-flat, E-flat or bass clef instruments and is especially nice for flute or vibes. The bossa nova tempo is 126 bpm and the lead trumpet range is to written B above the staff. Highly recommended! 10353488 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . MA 55.00 l The Goodbye LookDonald Fagan/arr. Fred Sturm. One of the masters of contemporary big band arranging, the late, great Fred Sturm completely captures the Steely Dan vibe in this arrangement of The Goodbye Look. Originally arranged for the WDR Big Band (Germany), Sturm gives the lead trombone and section Donald Fagan's voice of melody. Contrasted with full ensemble writing underneath a relaxed samba feel, this chart is the perfect addition to any program looking to add variety and enjoyment. There is also solo space for guitar and/or piano. 10519926 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . A 57.00 4 I'm Free (from "Tommy")Pete Townshend/ arr. Rick Hirsch. I'm Free is one of the many great tunes from The Who's rock opera "Tommy." With a nod to Mario Bauz and Tito Puente, Rick Hirsch has reimagined this classic rock anthem as a high energy mambo. The arrangement starts cooking right at the top and simply never lets up! Also featured is a great rhythm out section while percussion parts create an underlying palette as the ensemble breezes through a development section. There are optional solos for alto and baritone saxes, piano, and trumpet. There are no woodwind doubles in this creative work. This exciting, up-tempo samba for advancing groups is a great way to spotlight a fabulous trombone section on the familiar chord changes to In a Mellow Tone or Rose Room. MA 52.00 Not Your Momma's Samba—Paul Baker. is bright Latin/samba chart features the full ensemble getting off to a high-energy start, then the alto sax and trumpet take over to present the melody. e trombone section jumps in for the bridge before the trumpets make their majestic return to finish out the form. A 16-bar montuna builds in layers to send off the alto sax soloist, followed by a trombone soloist leading into the entire trombone section trading fours with the drummer. e trumpets join in for two more passages before the saxes take over with a hot section soli. e trumpets return with the final statement of the melody and lead to the big finish. Santa Monica is a spectacular Latin chart that burns right from the beginning. e opening melodic statement is introduced by a quartet of Alto Sax 1, Baritone Sax, Trumpet 2 and Guitar, with an optional flute part. e full band unison section builds and builds into the solo section. Coming out of the solo section, the band goes into stop-time, building and building to an exciting solo section playable by any of the five saxophones. e brass ranges are very moderate for this difficulty level, making the chart accessible to many ensembles. e rhythm section parts are fully notated with written brass ranges to: trumpet C6, trombone G4.
