l Introduction to a SambaJulian Adderley/arr.
Bob Curnow. Originally recorded by Cannonball
Adderley on his album Domination, and inspired
by Oliver Nelson, Bob Curnow's adaptation
of Introduction to a Samba features an alto
saxophone and trumpet duet stating the melody
supported by a traditional samba feel. There's
plenty of solo space for alto saxophone and
trumpet as they further enjoy the spotlight. The
drummer then has a short solo which leads back
to a restatement of the theme. All ranges are very
moderate. This chart is a great addition to any
program needing a solid Latin chart to provide
variety and spice!

4 Not Your Momma's SambaPaul Baker.
This bright Latin/samba chart features the full
ensemble getting off to a high-energy start,
then the alto sax and trumpet take over to
present the melody. The trombone section
jumps in for the bridge before the trumpets
make their majestic return to finish out the form.
A 16-bar montuna builds in layers to send off
the alto sax soloist, followed by a trombone
soloist leading into the entire trombone section
trading fours with the drummer. The trumpets join
in for two more passages before the saxes take
over with a hot section soli. The trumpets return
with the final statement of the melody and lead to
the big finish. It's an exciting chart for festivals or
any performance!

Goodwin. Tasty and groovy with a funky Latin
groove, this tune was composed by Dave Grusin
and arranged by Gordon to feature Dave and
guitarist Lee Ritenour on the Big Phat Band CD, Act
Your Age. If you have a piano player to showcase
and a tasty guitar player, this is a wonderful chart.
Not technically difficult, but dynamics and colors
are a key aspect of this arrangement. Doubles
include an optional flute on 2nd alto and optional
bass clarinet on bari sax, but sax parts are provided.

4 The Rat RaceRichard DeRosa. Rich DeRosa
has created a marvelous Latin composition in a
Baiao feel that comes out of the gate roaring! The
very hip melody is stated by flute, soprano and
alto saxohones, trumpet and piano. There's plenty
of room for improvisation with soloists of choice,
including space for the drummer and any other
percussion you might choose to add. The ending of
the chart is wild and will bring audiences to their feet!

4 Santa MonicaNeil Yorke-Slader. Santa Monica
is a spectacular Latin chart that burns right from
the beginning. The opening melodic statement is
introduced by a quartet of Alto Sax 1, Baritone Sax,
Trumpet 2 and Guitar, with an optional flute part.
The full band unison section builds and builds into
the solo section. Coming out of the solo section, the
band goes into stop-time, building and building to
an exciting solo section playable by any of the five
saxophones. The brass ranges are very moderate
for this difficulty level, making the chart accessible
to many ensembles. The rhythm section parts are
fully notated with written brass ranges to: trumpet

Building Walking Bass Lines—Ed Friedland. A walking bass line is the
most common approach to jazz bass playing, but it is also used in rock music,
blues, rockabilly, R&B, Gospel, Latin, country and many other types of music. The
term "walking" is used to describe the moving feeling that quarter notes create
in the bass part. The specific goal of this book is to familiarize players with the
techniques used to build walking bass lines and to make them aware of how the
process works. Through the use of 90 minutes of recorded rhythm tracks, players
will have the opportunity to put the new learning directly into action. This book
literally gives bassists the tools they need to build their own walking bass lines!.
