This very creative arrangement based upon What Child is This? and O Come, O Come Emmanuel will make a wonderful addition to holiday concerts. With very few exceptions, the horn parts amazingly never play anything more complicated than quarter notes and the ranges are very reasonable, yet the sound is huge and impressive. For musical contrast, there are short written solos for piano, alto, trumpet, and a short duet for both altos accompanied by a driving, "steamroller" rock feel. This inventive Paul Clark arrangement cleverly combines the familiar Christmas spiritual with Beethoven's Ode to Joy theme. Opening with a beautiful chorale in a light gospel style, it then breaks into a driving rock style at around 144 bpm. Further variety and interest is generated by modulations through the keys of B-flat, E-flat, and F to a big finish. There are no individual solos, but lots of sectional solis and solid ensemble sections.
