With limited brass ranges, this arrangement is playable by groups of almost any age and provides a great way to feature a drummer. This infectious islands chart is sure to light up any holiday concert! Take a familiar holiday classic, give it to a creative arranger, and you get a hard-driving rock chart that's filled with instrumental and dynamic contrasts. After an attention-grabbing introduction, a few bars of the melody are played quietly in 3/4. Then it's straight- ahead rock in 4/4! The open solo section for any instrument has only two chords, and the chart works fine even if the solo section is omitted. Bob Curnow has adapted the score in two versions to allow for the traditional jazz ensemble to perform a contemporary setting that will be a wonderful addition to any big band Christmas performance. The Pro Version is seven minutes in duration and includes improvised solos for alto saxophone and trumpet. The Edited Version is five minutes long and is exactly the same except there are no solos. Scored as a full ensemble chorale, this moving piece is filled with fluid cantabile lines, engaging counterpoint, lush harmonies, interesting modulations and gorgeous ensemble climaxes. e use of the rhythm section is kept to a minimum, with only bass and drums/triangle, as the focus is on a pure chorale sound. Set as a bright swinger at about 200 bpm, and originally arranged for the WDR Big Band (Germany), Richard DeRosa's arrangement of the traditional Christmas song Angels We Have Heard on High is an adventure from beginning to end! Reminiscent of Neil Hei's arrangement of Cute for the Count Basie Orchestra, DeRosa starts off with some interplay between the wind melody and drums. ere's solo space for drums and piano or guitar, and the lead saxophone is on soprano. Replace the first "Gloria" section with a great bebop sax soli and this arrangement already has audiences waiting to hear what comes next.
