chart builds energy throughout with carefully crafted
interplay between all sections of the ensemble.

4 Cannonball RunGordon Goodwin. Here's
the full big-band version of Gordon Goodwin's
Cannonball Run! It's a high-energy Latin/pop
cooker that moves along at a pretty good clip,
around 240 bpm. The saxophone lead is soprano
instead of alto, the lead trumpet range is written to
high F, and there's solo space for all saxes, trumpet
4, and trombones 1 and 2. A hot sax section soli
and some counterpoint round out this cannonball.
Very hot stuff!

This jazz fusion classic by Chick Corea was recorded
by Stan Getz in 1972 and also by Chick Corea with

Light as a Feather. In this exciting version for mature
jazz ensembles, Mike Tomaro retains the highly
energetic samba feel of the original while adding

n Cuban OvertureGeorge Gershwin/arr. Chris
Sharp. A serious work adapted from the symphonic
poem composed by George Gershwin, arranger
Chris Sharp has accepted the challenge to create
this amazing arrangement for big band. This chart is
a primarily a bright samba but it has a slow middle
section which reverts to the fiery samba groove. The
written or improvised solo space is for alto 1 and
trumpet 2 and the lead trumpet range is to D above
the staff. A percussion part is included as well. This
is a brilliant arrangement and will certainly be a high
point in any concert or festival performance.

Cubauza!Michael Philip Mossman. This exciting
Afro-Cuban composition is the opening cut from
the 1993 album 944 Columbus, the final recoding
by Mario Bauza, one of the most influential figures
in the development of Latin jazz. The title comes
from combining the words "Cuban" and "Bauza"
and features a bebop influence interpreted by the
Afro-Cuban rhythm section. This newly edited and
engraved edition is a "must have" for mature bands.

Eleanor RigbyLennon & McCartney/arr. Eric
Richards. Commissioned by the U.S. Army Jazz
Ambassadors, this Eric Richards chart shines new
light on the beauty and depth of this classic Beatles
hit. An up-tempo Brazilian groove gives way to hints
of samba and songo, but always with a smooth and
laid-back feel. A piano solo is featured off the top,
followed by a trio of tenor, trombone and guitar on
the head, and later solo space for one or more of
these players. A brief nod to the classical feel of the
original Beatles track helps build to a climatic shout
for the full ensemble. Nice!

l Fiesta MojoDizzy & Lorraine Gillespie/arr. Mark
Taylor. From Dizzy Gillespie's Afro-Cuban stylistic
period, here is his delightfully infectious Fiesta Mojo
set in a bouncy medium samba groove. A small
group (including optional flute) starts things off,
supported by colorful muted brass figures. There
are written or ad lib solo opportunities for tenor,
trumpet, and alto, along with a soli section for the
saxes, and a full ensemble unison chorus helps to
spice things up!

n Free Food?Rick Hirsch. An ode to ducks, of
course, this chart is a funny, catchy, good-humored
Calypso in C minor. With 16-bar solos scored for
several players, it's a great vehicle for featuring
a handful of soloists, and much more interesting
than endless blues choruses. Also featured are
robust sax and trombone solis along with a fun
and clever ending. Oh, and don't forget the trumpet
mouthpiece "quacks!"

n Gentle RainLuiz Bonfa/arr. Kris Berg.
A wonderful tune with rich textures and voicings,
Gentle Rain is a solo vehicle for C, B-flat, E-flat or
bass clef instruments and is especially nice for flute
or vibes. The bossa nova tempo is 126 bpm and the
lead trumpet range is to written B above the staff.
Highly recommended!

l The Goodbye LookDonald Fagan/arr. Fred
Sturm. One of the masters of contemporary
big band arranging, the late, great Fred Sturm
completely captures the Steely Dan vibe in this
arrangement of The Goodbye Look. Originally
arranged for the WDR Big Band (Germany), Sturm
gives the lead trombone and section Donald
Fagan's voice of melody. Contrasted with full
ensemble writing underneath a relaxed samba feel,
this chart is the perfect addition to any program
looking to add variety and enjoyment. There is also
solo space for guitar and/or piano.

4 I'm Free (from "Tommy")Pete Townshend/
arr. Rick Hirsch. I'm Free is one of the many great
tunes from The Who's rock opera "Tommy."
With a nod to Mario Bauz and Tito Puente, Rick
Hirsch has reimagined this classic rock anthem
as a high energy mambo. The arrangement starts
cooking right at the top and simply never lets up!
Also featured is a great rhythm out section while
percussion parts create an underlying palette as the
ensemble breezes through a development section.
There are optional solos for alto and baritone
saxes, piano, and trumpet. There are no woodwind
doubles in this creative work. Sonic, challenging
and well worth the effort!

l In a Brazilian Bone ToneTom Kubis. This
exciting, up-tempo samba for advancing groups is a
great way to spotlight a fabulous trombone section
on the familiar chord changes to In a Mellow Tone
or Rose Room. The trombones not only play the
melody, but also the shout chorus, and each player
in the section has changes for soloing. Adding Latin
percussion instruments will add even more flair to
this great trombone section feature!
