More accessible than most Gordon Goodwin charts, this one is a killer funk tune that is unbelievably exciting! It lays well at around 120 bpm and has written or improvised solos for alto/bari, tenor, trumpet, and trombone. Electric piano will sound great on the funky piano introduction, the lead trumpet range is up to written high C, and optional auxiliary percussion, flute and vibes parts are included. Written in a simmering medium tempo, this distinctive funk chart opens with the bass establishing the groove gradually joined by the rest of the rhythm section. A small combo of soprano sax, baritone sax, trumpet and trombone takes the first statement followed by the full ensemble on intricate unison lines as well as tutti ensemble punches and riffs. Los Angeles-based jazz composer Jeff Jarvis composed this tuneful funk chart entitled Backdraft. This medium-level chart has all the characteristics of Jarvis' best-selling funk charts such as Critical Mass, Honk, Old School and Mohave Breakdown, and alternates between 3/4 and 4/4 funk feels. Infectious piano comping, punchy bass lines, and fun single-note guitar comping support the catchy melody.
