Foreword Hope in the Shadows recalls Christ's journey to the cross by examining the shadows of betrayal, injustice and agony that marked that journey. It contrasts the selfish exploits of humanity with the divine nature of a loving God. As you take this sacred journey, may the words of James be a re- minder of the hope which is ours: Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (James 1:17) This 35-minute musical journey is for S.A.T.B. choir with narrator(s), and includes options for soloists and congregation. The 5-piece instrumental ensemble, scored by Ed Hogan, includes parts for flute, oboe, clarinet, cello and French horn, and may be used in any combination. This work is designed to be used anytime during Holy Week or the Lenten season. Lighting seven candles during the opening narration and extin- guishing one after the conclusion of each of the seven sections can greatly enhance the worship experience. This work is unique in that we've in- cluded the re-lighting of the Christ candle at the end, signifying the hope of the coming resurrection. We suggest you consider having the congre- gation exit in silence after singing the first verse of "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross." — Lloyd Larson and Joel Raney For Preview Only
