perfectly in both sacred or secular settings. Here,

Written for two-part or unison voices and piano,
this absolutely delightful setting of a Nova Scotian

H Omnia Sol (Let Your Heart Be Staid)
Z. Randall Stroope. This is simply too good not to
consider for your choir. Omnia sol temperat, "the
sun warms everything," comes from a verse of
Latin found in "Carmina Burana." The composer's
English text speaks to the human need to anchor
words of love and commitment in the hearts of
those who have been pillars along life's way. An
important contribution to the choral literature!

H The Promise of LivingAaron Copland.
Aaron Copland's quintet from "The Tender Land"
translates beautifully into this setting for combined
chorus with band! Although it makes a perfect
choice for Thanksgiving, the wonderful vocal lines
make it a magnificent showpiece any time of year.
The SATB choral part can stand alone, and offers
a piano 4 hands accompaniment. The optional
concert band accompaniment is at the medium
level and requires the choral part for performance.
It's a fantastic way to program music by a great
American composer!

l Quiet SeaJill Friedersdorf & Melissa Keylock. A
song of hope and promise, the simple melodic idea
begins in an opening baritone solo before being
picked up by the sopranos and altos. This melodic
idea continues to be shared freely throughout the
piece. The piano accompaniment adds support
and forward motion as the choir asks "Where is
the quiet sea? Where is the sun so fair? Lost in the
storm, lost in the clouds... yet there."

4 Rain MusicVictor C. Johnson. This forward-
moving, rhythmically driven music enhances
the dramatic, image-laden text of Kentucky-
born poet and playwright Joseph S. Cotter, Jr.
Shifting mixed meter is very effective in giving this
selection a dance-like quality. Close harmonies,
especially in the contrasting middle section, and
effective unison, two-, three- and four-part writing
throughout heighten the musical effect. Optional
parts for rain stick and djembe.

l Refuge (from "Sing Evermore!")Gwyneth
Walker. An assuring text from master poet

take refuge in singing. Ever sensitive to the text,
Walker crafts word painting throughout with
shimmering piano accompaniment figures, textural
changes, and fanfare-like passages in the voices
on the word "free." Excerpted from the larger
work "Sing Evermore!", which has orchestrated
accompaniment available.

sets a joyful text celebrating the beauty found
all around us in everyday life. Characterized by

hymnlike B section as the text evolves into a call
for strength despite troubles that may come. Fun
and meaningful!

ABIDE
Dan Forrest. Dan Forrest's SATB
divisi setting of a poem by the late
Jake Adam York is simply stunning!
Both the poet and composer were
inspired by the old hymn Abide with
Me and elements of that tune can be
found throughout the composition,
though the poem remains secular.
The music is homophonic in nature
and leaves the listener with a sense
of, to quote the composer, "the
warmth of a summer's evening." The
piano part plays a vital role in the
coloring of the piece and seamlessly
connects the choral entrances. Abide
is a rare and beautiful piece of art; we
give it our highest recommendation!
