EDITORS' CHOICE
Quest—James Barnes.
This dramatic work for young players is intended to portray a noble,
mystical pursuit of great conquest or accomplishment. In addition
to driving percussion, resolving tone clusters, dramatic brass
writing and spectacular tutti musical statements, it also features easy
passages for solo oboe, bassoon, and piccolo. It's also generously
cross-cued to be performed with limited instrumentation.

The Rains of Scarborough Fair—arr. Randall D. Standridge.
Scarborough Fair is simply one of the most beautiful and
haunting melodies of all time. This setting of the melancholy
tune captures the mood of a gray and rainy afternoon, perfectly
matching the sounds of gently falling rain and distant rumbles of
thunder. Though not essential, sound effect recordings of distant
rain and thunder can be added for additional appeal and interest.

Red—Robert W. Smith.
A powerful and energetic work for concert and festival
performance. As the first movement from Krisanna's Colors, the
suite is inspired by the color choices used to describe her daily
emotions and moods. Beginning with a somber clarinet solo
and choir, the mood quickly changes to bombastic and extreme
energy. You may consider programming this with the other
movements: Blue (Mvt. 2) and Yellow (Mvt. 3) for greater effect.

Revolution—Gary D. Ziek.
Bold and restless like most revolutions, this piece combines
a sense of passion and hope with anxious undercurrents.
Mounting levels of musical tension build relentlessly like a
restless mob that grows and intensifies as it charges through the
streets. A quiet waltz-like section slows the action, gradually
taking on a more anxious and almost sinister nature which then
charges forth to the frenzied and triumphant conclusion.

Run!—Ed Huckeby.
A vibrant, rhythmic work and a great choice for your band's next
performance. This exciting work introduces a fast and furious
syncopated pace that explores alternating rhythmic groupings of
two and three. Driving percussion and changing moods create
special musical tension between the syncopated melodic lines and
flowing harmonies. Given its significant flair and unique musical
flavor, this work will have a tremendous appeal.

Scottish Highland Overture—Nathan Jones.
Take a musical stroll through the Scottish highlands with this
picturesque selection. This overture is based on an original
melody with a Scottish-sounding flair. It opens in a lively and
articulated style, based loosely in the Dorian mode. The slower
middle section features a flowing horn solo, followed by a return
to the opening material that marches the music forward to its
rousing Celtic conclusion.

Sedona—Steven Reineke/arr. Rob Romeyn.
Long a favorite of advanced bands, this arrangement has been
carefully and skillfully adapted for less-experienced groups
yet keeps all of the style and Western flair of the original. An
outstanding addition to concert or festival programs for your
young band.

Shadows Unseen—Todd Stalter.
Using modified student-submitted melodic examples and ideas,
this work is a uniquely collaborative piece. The mysterious
sounds evoke figures of darkness that exist in the shadows
around us, some of which we keep to ourselves. The music
develops effectively and ends optimistically, reminding us that
the shadows are small compared to the light that can create or
erase them.

The Shady Grove—arr. Travis J. Weller.
This memorable Civil War-era folk song has a distinctively
haunting quality. The moving melody opens the piece on
a slightly melancholy note that leads to the spirited middle
section, glistening with good-natured rhythmic activity. Adding
to the authenticity, the entertaining addition of washboard and
spoons brings this catchy bluegrass tune to life, helping us
connect to this delightful American folk song.

Spontaneous Beings—Brian Balmages.
This work is based on an authentic folk music tradition and
oral history of a large group of Native American tribes of
northeastern North America. The title is a literal translation
of their name for themselves. The piece relies heavily on
traditional percussion instruments, with optional substitutes
suggested, in an approachable yet powerful presentation.

Swirling Prisms—Brian Balmages.
The innovative use of astonishing instrumental colors
conveys the concept of optical prisms spinning freely while
reflecting light in numerous directions. Giving a strong nod to
Impressionism, the music has a significant focus on harmony,
texture and orchestration, unlike anything this composer has
done previously.

This Cruel Moon—John Mackey.
This terrific work is a wonderful adaptation of the middle
movement of the larger work Wine-Dark Sea: Symphony
for Band. It's meant to represent the song of the beautiful
and immortal nymph Kalypso who saves Odysseus, falls in
love with him, and ultimately loses him. The music is very
expressive, with quiet moments of tenderness that swell to
moving climaxes, finally subsiding to close with a moving touch
of sadness and loss.

To Seek the Glorious—Paul Murtha.
This expansive overture for band takes the listener and
performers on a varied path of moods and styles. The opening
portrays the start of a new day, full of wonder and promise.
The second section paraphrases the hymn On Eagles Wings,
representing curiosity in the world. A lyric section follows,
featuring a solo for trumpet, before the final dynamic and
powerful segment that winds down to a quiet closing setting of
Bach's Sleeper's Wake.

Tribal Journeys—Justin Harden.
From Africa and Asia to the Middle East and Mediterranean,
the tribal tapestries of our world provide the inspiration and
content for this impressive work. Beginning with a hauntingly
beautiful flute solo, the piece quickly progresses to a driving and
energetic grouping of melodies drawn from many cultures. An
exciting and motivating work for developing musicians that will
work in multiple concert settings.

Twittering Machine—Brian Balmages.
Inspired by the ambiguous 1922 artwork of Swiss-German
painter Paul Klee, this dark piece depicts a powerful struggle
between nature and machine. The haunting melody slowly
transforms as the threatening machine around it grows,
represented by a series of layered and varied percussion sounds.
A deeply rich and powerful work for young bands.

Venom—Randall D. Standridge.
A thrilling work for young concert band inspired by the
predators of the animal world that use venom to hunt their prey.
This extraordinary selection utilizes a slightly exotic scale,
bombastic as well as varied percussion instrumentation, and
biting, dissonant chords to create a pulse pounding musical
portrait of an attack by one of these fascinating creatures.

The beautiful simplicity of this moving hymn is given a
respectful, touching treatment in this lyric setting. Rich and
expressive textures introduce a solo presentation of the melody
which is cross-cued for multiple soloist options. The music
grows in volume and depth before subsiding to a quiet and
hauntingly beautiful finish.

Designed as an extended fanfare, this piece quickly builds
in intensity with each subsequent phrase. Opening with the
percussion in a stately style, the main theme is first heard in a
chorale-like setting that grows, gathering strength throughout,
culminating in a fast-paced and brilliant-sounding flourish.

This unique and free style setting of the hymn song What
Wondrous Love focuses on the variety and appeal of tonal
colors and instrumental textures possible with wind band
instrumentation, bringing an appealing musical element to
concert programming. While the technical demands are written
for younger ensembles, the expressive quality of the melody and
scoring are appropriate for bands at all levels.

Woodwinds Of Mass Destruction—Matt Conaway.
The time is right to bring some musical shock and awe to your
performances. The woodwinds finally get some special attention
without ignoring the rest of the band. A brief and ominous
opening march soon gives way to a raucous display of fast trills
and flourishes that show off what these instruments, even the
bass woodwinds, are capable of doing. Highly effective for
concerts and recruiting performances.
