Erik Morales. Eddie Harris' Cold Duck Time features a straight eighth feel and a very hip opening intro lick. This terrific chart is set in a funky, rock groove at about 132 - 144 bpm and has written or improvised solo space for alto sax, bari sax, trumpet 2, and guitar. Allen Gray. James Brown had many great hits, and this one translates into a funky jazz band chart that's sure to be a favorite. Set at around 116 bpm, it exudes all the soul and funk of the Godfather of Soul with authentic ensemble and sectional passages that are so important to this style. The solo section features room for improvised solos from any of the saxes, trumpets or trombones. Similar to Lee Morgan's Sidewinder, this tune is written in a moderate soul/jazz style. This funky arrangement for six horns and rhythm section is sprinkled with stop-time breaks and catchy riffs, plus it's a fun chart for soloing! The small band instrumentation is for six horns (ATB saxes, two trumpets and one trombone) plus four rhythm with optional additional parts included for alto, tenor and trombone. It's perfect for smaller programs and additional ensemble opportunities! 10617900 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 45.00 H Critical MassJeff Jarvis. Here's a chart that everybody's gonna like! It's a straight-ahead funk chart with an infectious beat, popping bass, cool sax licks and hard brass pops. If you've tried Jeff's other funk charts, you're going to want this one. And if you haven't, you'd better get started! Definitely a hip, groovin' tune that better bands will get into! 2439297 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 52.00 H Crunchy FrogGordon Goodwin. Bass and guitar kick off this original Gordon Goodwin chart with a captivating rhythmic pattern before the full ensemble settles in with the funky melody. There's plenty of ensemble writing, some in unison and some in harmony, and solo space for all winds with suggested or improv solos. The lead trumpet range goes to written G-sharp on top of the staff, the tempo is around 115 beats per minute, and optional parts are included for expanded instrumentations. Scottish funk group Average White Band had two major hits that helped solidify the horn-driven funk sound of the '70s. Pick Up the Pieces was released in 1974 and Cut the Cake followed close behind in 1975. Signature tunes with catchy horn licks that still sound great today! Inspired by the Weather Report classic Birdland, the drummer and bassist set up the groove and it's off to the races with a floating melody that soars over the rhythm section. Written or ad lib solos are indicated for alto saxophone 1 and trumpet 2, while additional features include a B section with a half-time groove for drums and bass, plus lots of full ensemble passages and an optional flute part. Gordon Goodwin wrote this funky chart at the medium grade level to showcase trumpet 1 and trombone 1. Everything is written out, including the melody duet, the solos, and the featured trades. Dallas Burke. This funky hit from Michael Jackson's Off the Wall album translates into a groovin' jazz chart everyone will enjoy. Joe Schaefer has a real handle on the modern funk/rock groove, and his Funkmania is sure to please. A special feature is the a cappella sax section trading with the brass after the solos. Plus, there's room for an extended drum solo at the end if you wish. MA 52.00 Here to Stay—Metheny & Mays/arr. Bob Curnow. Set in an easy-going rock feel, this Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays composition is sure to be a band and audience favorite. Based on the original recording from the Pat Metheny Group album We Live Here, Here to Stay is another remarkable arrangement from Bob Curnow that includes solo space for trumpet, sweeping lyrical ensemble passages, and contrasting interludes that build to a climatic ending. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant's iconic rock tour-de-force receives a powerful and dynamic treatment here for contemporary jazz ensembles! This Led Zeppelin classic features a creative concept with a lush rock ballad beginning featuring a flugelhorn solo, before the band starts a powerful and full ensemble section. Next, the tempo speeds up and and there's room to feature a soloist before the tempo and intensity increase again and the band starts to really rock. As the ensemble reaches high gear, there's more solos over the top of the band before returning to a lush ending featuring the flugelhorn soloist again. M 65.00 Tweet Fatigue—Gordon Goodwin. Gordon Goodwin wrote this superb chart for a good high school jazz ensemble to be played around 126 bpm with a straight-eighth feel and a rock groove. The saxes start things off a cappella then things heat up in a quirky, but clever Goodwin way. Solo space is provided for a variety of players with separate sample solos provided for C, B-flat, E-flat, and trombone soloists. An auxiliary percussion part plus all the usual optional parts plus vibes are included for augmented instrumentations. Randy Newman tunes are always fun and creative, and Joe Cocker made this one even more fun! This salty and rockin' blues tune makes a jazz ensemble arrangement that has plenty of big hits and excitement. It features all the horn licks you remember, along with a smoky groove in the rhythm section, and also has room for your soloists to stretch out in the key of B-flat.
