Apollo's Reel is set in a bright 3/4 feel with temporary shifts to a 4/4 swing feel. This modern piece will provide energy and depth to any concert! 10759902 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 60.00 Blues for the Knight—Chris Creswell. Proficient big bands will love this uptempo minor blues swinger! The melody is featured in an alto/trumpet/optional guitar small-group setting before the rest of the band enters with tasty licks in response. The solo section features room for your alto saxophonist to stretch out, followed by an open solo section with more background licks. There's a great stop-time ensemble section with the bari sax laying down the bass line while the horns lay down some seriously funky solis. Then everything gets big with the intensity building to a big shout before returning to the original small-group feature. Highly recommended! 10752063 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 50.00 Bop of the World—Jeff Jarvis. Playable by most high school big bands, Bop of the World is equally appropriate as an opener, closer, or anything in between. Scored at the medium difficulty level, the chart sounds more difficult than it really is due to the use of standard bebop vocabulary and reasonable brass ranges. Included are brief saxophone soli passages that lay well on the instruments, a stop- time section featuring the horns, and accessible solo changes. A great introduction to the style! 10754219 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 52.00 Celia—Bud Powell/arr. Mark Taylor. Using a combination of hip-hop and up-tempo swing, here's a marvelous take on Bud Powell's bebop classic. A front line of alto, tenor and trumpet are featured off the top followed by an extended soli for the entire trumpet section. Solo space is provided for tenor sax, then a sax soli and ensemble shout round things out in this impressive chart! 10759326 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A 60.00 Checkpoint Charlie—Oliver Nelson/ed. Bob Curnow. As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra on their album Berlin Dialogue for Orchestra, Checkpoint Charlie is some of Nelson's most creative writing. Full of uptempo energy, Nelson masterfully intertwines the melody in the saxophones with counterlines from the brass to create an incredible tapestry of sound. There is plenty of solo space for trombone to stretch out, giving a great contrast from the full ensemble sections to the lone soloist with rhythm section. This edited version maintains the integrity of the original recording while simplifying some of the rhythms, making brass ranges more accessible, and providing solo space for tenor, trumpet, or trombone. 10759904 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 50.00 Feeling Good—Bricusse & Newley/arr. Dallas Burke. This Bricusse and Newley Broadway classic has enjoyed immense popularity since the version recorded by Michael Buble. This chart begins with with an epic and swingin' full- ensemble section reminiscent of the Buble version. There's a sultry trumpet solo before the band cranks into an uptempo Latin groove featuring room for soloists and lots of inventive horn lines. The chart goes back to the original swing style to bring the house down for a big ending! Highly recommended! 10752067 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 65.00 Fender Bender—Chris Scarnato. If you're looking for a modern, very swinging blues chart your ensemble can handle, Chris Scarnato has nailed one for you. This chart is modern Basie-style big-band jazz in the friendly key of B-flat concert, making for a great opener or closer your band will really enjoy playing. The solo section can be opened up with outstanding backgrounds played on cue. Don't miss the totally awesome sax soli and the drum solo interlude that leads into the last chorus. Highly recommended! 10757119 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 52.00 Five Got the Blues—Bill Conway. Here is the very playable 5/4 chart you've been looking for. This burning Mike Tomaro original will make a great program choice for more experienced groups. An abundance of wonderful ensemble writing combines with a strong melodic line to create a solid foundation for the open solo sections. The driving shuffle groove will have the audience just as involved in the performance as the musicians! 10754257 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 56.00 Lu's Blues—Rick Lawn. Here's a dramatic and modern Thad Jones-style take on an extended blues form making for an exciting chart for everyone! Beginning with an opening glissando and punch, this chart announces itself in style. Muted trumpets take the melody and then hand it off to the saxes. A Harmon-muted trumpet solo leads to a trombone section soli which includes the bass player. An interlude sets up the piano solo, which is followed by a tenor sax solo. A recap of the bridge and melody leads to a restatement of the intro before the ensemble builds to the final statement. The trumpet range is to written B-flat. A true tour de force that will showcase dynamics, style, technique, and musicianship! 10754134 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 50.00 Meet the Flintstones—arr. Chris Sharp. This immensely popular theme from the past is the ultimate uptempo swinger! Along with the classic melody, you'll find room for soloists to stretch out with improvised or written solos for alto saxophone and trumpet. There's some great shout choruses included before taking the melody to the close with a slower recap of the melody that swings hard to the final chord. Really nice! 10752069 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A 65.00 New Rhumba—Ahmad Jamal/arr. Erik Morales. Ahmad Jamal's jazz standard is played here at around 160 bpm and was originally recorded by Miles Davis. This superb chart is set in a funky/swing style to provide a contemporary flavor. Written or ad lib solo space is provided for tenor and trumpet, the brass ranges are accessible, and there are some great sax section solis. Additionally, optional parts are included for expanded instrumentations. A wonderful chart that is highly recommended! 10756398 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 52.00 On the Ginza—Wayne Shorter/arr. Mark Taylor. Mark Taylor uses a mix of small group playing contrasted with full ensemble passages in this early composition from jazz master Wayne Shorter. After a solo section featuring alto sax then trombone, a sax soli leads to a short yet powerful tutti ensemble shout. Suggested solos, chord/scale sheets in all keys, and fully notated bass lines and piano voicings are included. 10759330 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 55.00 Opus de Funk (Little Big Band)— Horace Silver/arr. Chuck Israels. Here's a Horace Silver standard blues piece set in a small band format. It's joyful and subtle at the same time, with a specific eighth-note feel, without which the chart will sound overly bouncy. But with the right emphasis and phrasing, it's a swinging chart with few difficulties once the eighth-note feel has been mastered. Small Band: ATB Saxes, Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Bass, and Drums. 10757442 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 50.00 A Question of Hope—Antonio J. Garcia. Commissioned by the Jazz Division of the Illinois Music Educators Association for the 2018 Illinois All-State Jazz Ensemble, A Question of Hope is an ECM straight-eighth chart that will prove to be an excellent choice for concerts and festivals. 10715271 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 56.00 Sister Sadie (Little Big Band)— Horace Silver/arr. Chuck Israels. Chuck Israels: "I have heard that Gil Evans once said that all he'd do to score this piece would be to orchestrate Horace Silver's piano playing. I had done exactly that (before I had heard that Gil thought the same way about expanding this music), and the results have been reliably spectacular. We play it slightly faster than the original recording, but not so fast that the piece becomes frantic. It is energized enough and practically foolproof." Small Band: ATB Saxes, Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Bass, and Drums. 10757446 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 50.00 Sub Zero—Roger Schmidli. Sub Zero is a bright jazz shuffle in the style of New York's legendary Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. The title reflects the composer's memories of his first visit to hear the band at the Village Vanguard in New York City during the depths of winter. After a quick a cappella trombone section introduction, it quickly settles into a tight and fun shuffle featuring piano and rhythm section. The full ensemble has its say before improvised solos for trombone, trumpet in plunger, and bass. Things really start to cook during the trumpet solo, then the bassist brings the intensity down a notch followed by the band roaring back in. Don't miss the very cool trombone section break before the band brings it to a finale. Highly recommended! 10748154 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 57.00 Take the 'A' Train—Billy Strayhorn/arr. Rich DeRosa. Ever heard of Take the 'A' Train? Not like this you haven't! Another ingenious arrangement from the towering Rich DeRosa, this uptempo swing chart is a journey through creative waters from beginning to end and will not disappoint. In addition to incredible ensemble writing, there is improvisation space for piano and alto saxophone. As recorded by the University of North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band on their album Lab 2013, DeRosa's arrangement of Take the 'A' Train is a must for any serious band. 10759924 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
