ME 45.00 EDITORS' CHOICE Combo • Medium-Easy to Advanced Each year Pepper's Editors review hundreds of new releases and choose the cream of the crop to bear the name, Editors' Choice. You can buy any of these titles with confidence! Cotton Tail (Little Big Band)—Duke Ellington/arr. Mark Taylor. Here's one of Duke Ellington's iconic tunes in a swingin' chart scored for the little big band format. Mark Taylor really gets the most out of just six horn parts in this great-sounding chart! Solo space is included for trombone and alto sax, and then later for piano and trumpet. Here's a great opportunity to feature your key big band players! 10759364 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .ME 45.00 Dat Dere (Little Big Band)—Bobby Timmons/arr. Mark Taylor. Penned by Bobby Timmons and recorded by a number of jazz artists over the years, Dat Dere is a great example of soul jazz from the early '60s. This arrangement for little big band features alto sax and trumpet on the head, a section for open solos, and a short ensemble shout at the end. Perfect for small bands and a reliable programming choice! 10759362 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .ME 45.00 Doodlin' (Little Big Band)—Horace Silver/arr. Chuck Israels. Horace Silver created a blues with a perfectly consistent character and structured the accompaniments and his piano solo in perfect balance. Orchestrating the piano parts from the original recording is a fairly straightforward process. Some thought goes into choosing which instruments best express the music and there's some attention paid to contrasting timbres and textures, but so much of the music already exists in Silver's piano playing, both in his solos and in his accompaniments, that the piece is already there without additional writing. It's a perfect framework that will produce a telling performance. Small Band: ATB Saxes, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, Guitar, Bass, and Drums. 10757434 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . M 50.00 Georgia on My Mind (Little Big Band)— Hoagy Carmichael/arr. Mike Tomaro. Made popular by Ray Charles, but recorded by countless artists through the years, Hoagy Carmichael's beloved classic is instantly recognizable. This chart for little big band features a slow and bluesy swing style with solos for alto sax and trombone. Instrumentation: ATB Saxes; 2 Trumpets, 1 Trombone and rhythm section with optional parts included for Alto Sax, Tenor Sax and Trombone. Highly recommended! 10775166 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .ME 45.00 Git-Down Time—Rick Hirsch. Flexibly scored for many combinations of horns and rhythm section, and playable with as few as one horn and rhythm section, Git-Down Time is a catchy New Orleans street beat chart that's very exciting and fun. Built on a 24-bar blues in F, it's an accessible improvisation vehicle, plus it features a nice ensemble chorus and over-the-top ending. Based on the big-band chart Pocono Git-Down by Rick Hirsch. 10734992 Combo (Flexible Instrumentation). . . . . . . . . . M 24.00 10734992E Combo (Flexible Instrumentation) ePrint . . . . Jazz Combo Pak No. 45 contains four complete favorites made famous by The Beatles: Blackbird; Can't Buy Me Love; And I Love Her and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. The set includes parts for Bb, Eb and C instruments plus Piano, Guitar, Bass and Drums for ultimate instrumentation flexibility. Audio tracks are available online from the publisher. 10759374 Combo with Online Audio Access (3-Plus Horns & Rhythm Section). . . . . . . . .ME 45.00 Opus de Funk (Little Big Band)—Horace Silver/arr. Chuck Israels. Here's a Horace Silver standard blues piece set in a small band format. It's joyful and subtle at the same time, with a specific eighth-note feel, without which the chart will sound overly bouncy. But with the right emphasis and phrasing, it's a swinging chart with few difficulties once the eighth-note feel has been mastered. Small Band: ATB Saxes, Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Bass, and Drums. 10757442 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 50.00 Seven Mountains Mambo—Rick Hirsch. This small-group chart is based on the big-band chart Mambo over the Mountain, also by Rick Hirsch. The inspiration for this one is based on the great mambos of Spanish Harlem and includes a catchy tune with a danceable groove. The three-chord solo section is accessible by developing improvisers and feels great for more experienced players. With its flexibly scored instrumentation, it works well with many combinations of horns plus rhythm section, and as few as one horn plus rhythm section. 10734996 Combo (Flexible Instrumentation). . . . . . . . . . M 24.00 10734996E Combo (Flexible Instrumentation) ePrint . . . . M 24.00 Sister Sadie (Little Big Band)—Horace Silver/arr. Chuck Israels. Chuck Israels: "I have heard that Gil Evans once said that all he'd do to score this piece would be to orchestrate Horace Silver's piano playing. I had done exactly that (before I had heard that Gil thought the same way about expanding this music), and the results have been reliably spectacular. We play it slightly faster than the original recording, but not so fast that the piece becomes frantic. It is energized enough and practically foolproof." Small Band: ATB Saxes, Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Bass, and Drums. 10757446 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MA 50.00 We Tango Tonight—Rick Hirsch. A long-stemmed rose may well come in handy for this cheeky tune. Warning: We Tango Tonight, with its sinewy melody, will stick with you long after you play it, and your audiences may request an encore! Composed to feature an accordion soloist, it works well as a trumpet feature or a trumpet and tenor sax duo feature. The exotic harmonic minor flavor is approachable by developing improvisers and great fun for more advanced players. It's based on the big-band chart Tonight, We Tango. With its flexible instrumentation, this chart works with many combinations of horn players and rhythm section, and with as few as one horn and rhythm section. 10734990 Combo (Flexible Instrumentation). . . . . . . . . . M 24.00 10734990E Combo (Flexible Instrumentation) ePrint . . . . M 24.00 Why We Can't Have Nice Things—Gordon Goodwin. What you have here is your basic flag-waving, barn-burning, straight- ahead swing chart for a small group: tenor sax, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, drums and auxiliary percussion. Sure, it's a challenge, but very doable with your more experienced or key players. As recorded by Gordon Goodwin's Little Phat Band, the solo space is for tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone. They can handle it! 10756408 Combo (Octet) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A 48.00 My Library Plan your next performance online for free. jwpepper.com/mylibrary
