Oh Soul Mio—arr. Billy Byers. This is the original
Billy Byers arrangement made famous by the
Count Basie Orchestra as recorded on the Pop
Goes the Basie album! Up front is a conducted
trombone solo followed by everything loved about
Basie, from swingin' laid-back melodies to mind-
blowing shout choruses. Beginning with a six-bar
conducted trombone solo intro, it eases into a
shuffle swing style at about 97 bpm. Plunger
solos by trombone and trumpet, great sax soli
sections, a key change, and full band shouts, this
chart has it all! If you love other Basie tunes like
I Can't Stop Loving You or I Left My Heart in San
Francisco, you will definitely want this chart in
your library. Highly recommended!

Yasinitsky. Greg Yasinitsky has set Charlie Parker's
great bebop tune to swing at about 172 - 200

included) for tenor sax, and piano, this is fine big
band swing chart on a great tune. The lead trumpet
range goes up to written B-flat above the staff and
optional flute and vibraphone parts are included.
This is essential jazz repertoire, and this chart is
very highly recommended!

sax 1 and trumpet 4 is primarily based on the
Dorian mode and includes suggested scales. The
chart dives into a modern wind ensemble section
after the solos before it recaps the melody on its
way out. Part of the Metroplexity Big Band series,
this chart is highly recommended!

trombone. Of course, improvised solos are an
option. An auxiliary percussion part plus optional

Edition)—Thad Jones. Big Dipper was originally
commissioned by Count Basie for an entire album
of Thad Jones' music; however, Basie never made
the record, instead suggesting that Thad start his
own band. Big Dipper still maintains that swinging
Basie mindset and is an extended 16-bar blues. Its
basic foundations are a relaxed but powerful rhythm
section with a driving ride cymbal and crisp hi-hat
underpinning saxes and brass that are tight and
always on the back of the beat.
