H Work Song—Nat Adderley/arr. Erik Morales. Wow!
If Nat Adderley could hear this chart on his iconic jazz
standard, he would be pleased! The first statement
stays very close to the original, which is a good
thing. The solos are for written or improvised alto
and trumpet, and the solo backgrounds are simply
wonderful. This swinger plays well at about 176
bmp, has excellent full-ensemble passages, a bari
sax and rhythm section break before the last chorus,
an exciting shout chorus, and great development.
This chart has it all! Our highest recommendation!

4 Yuriko—Billy Byers. This is a quintessential
original chart for the Count Basie Orchestra.
Originally recorded on Basie Land, the easy swing
feel and tempo make this piece very accessible to
most bands. There is a bit of flute in two saxophone
parts. There are solos for tenor, trumpet, and
piano. Of course there is the required masterful
shout chorus that leads to a quiet, cool ending.
The ranges make this a very accessible chart for
developed bands.

Active Measures—Rick Lawn. Active Measures
is a classic straight-ahead swing chart with bebop
overtones that groove right along, especially behind
the soloists. Additional features include two sax soli
sections and a short journey into a straight-eighth
Latin feel. Cup mutes are featured throughout the
brass and instantly place the listener back in the
day. Solo space is provided for piano, trumpet, and
tenor sax, and a surprise coda appears just before
the ending. Brass ranges: trumpet to written high
D and trombone to written A-flat. A great chart for
festival or concert programs!

Anything More?—Lars Halle. Show off your
rhythm section with this high powered bebop chart
for experienced groups based on I Got Rhythm
changes. The unique intro features the horns and
the drummer on ride cymbal, and then they trade
phrases. After some dynamic ensemble playing, the
chart launches right into a piano solo with super
backgrounds. Then there's a sax soli, and later a
section where the bass and drums trade fours.
Afterward, the full band soars to take it home. Could
there be anything more?

Apollo's Reel—Tom Molter. Tom Molter has
composed an exciting and compelling piece akin
to the big-band charts inspired by the music of Pat
Metheny. Apollo's Reel is set in a bright 3/4 feel with
temporary shifts to a 4/4 swing feel. This modern
piece will provide energy and depth to any concert!

4 At Long Last Love—Cole Porter/arr. Billy Byers.
As recorded on This Time by Basie!, this arrangement
is pure Basie. Opening with a short figure
reminiscent of the Count, the band then swings at
a bright tempo into a terrific version of this great
melody. There is a solo for tenor saxophone and
moderate ranges for all.

Beauty and the Beast—Alan Menken/arr. Gordon
Goodwin. Gordon Goodwin pays tribute to the great
Count Basie on this famous Disney tune. With a
slow Basie groove, solos for piano and tenor sax,
dynamics galore, and a fabulous shout chorus, this
is a fantastic chart from start to finish. As performed
by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band.

H Black Hole Sun—Chris Cornell/arr. James Miley.
James Miley presents a very hip arrangement of
a great contemporary tune. Soundgarden's Black
Hole Sun is masterfully scored for the modern big
band, making great use of interesting saxophone
effects, a wonderful rhythm section feel, neat
rhythmic ideas, and very playable ensemble parts.
The trumpet range is an optional written D. The
melody is stated by tenor saxophone and trumpet
with warm, dissonant backgrounds provided by the
ensemble. The soloists can be as chosen for tenor
saxophone, trumpet and/or trombone, making this
very flexible for the strengths of your band.

Blue Train—John Coltrane/arr. Kris Berg. Kris
Berg has scored John Coltrane's jazz standard to
offer strong ensemble writing, a fierce sax section
soli on Coltrane's transcribed solo, and solo space
on the 12-bar blues chord progression. It's flexible
so you can have as few or as many soloists as
desired with backgrounds as needed. Great tune,
great chart... it's as simple as that!

Blues & More—Jeff Jarvis. As the title implies,
this chart is more than just another blues chart.
Blues & More is scored in a blues format, but
with a bridge. Featuring a tuneful melody, this
exciting and fun chart has a great groove with its
medium swing shuffle style. The exciting ensemble
parts are supported by rich harmonies, and all
instruments have interesting parts to play. With
the accessible blues progression, everyone can
get into the spotlight using the E-flat, B-flat and
C solo sheets that are included. A very effective
horns-only section is followed by solis for each
horn section. It grooves right on home to a big
finale, and it's highly recommended!

Bolivia—Cedar Walton/arr. Eric Richards. A big
ensemble introduction leads into the familiar and
hip bass and piano line followed by the melody
stated by alto, tenor, trumpet, and trombone. This
chart also features great section and full ensemble
parts throughout, a huge shout chorus, and the
lead trumpet goes to written high D. Solo space is
available for alto, tenor, trumpet, and drums. This
extended arrangement is a great big band chart on
a great Cedar Walton jazz classic. An ideal festival
chart for better bands!

l Bossa Nova de Funk (Edited Edition)—Willy
Maiden/arr. Bob Curnow. Recorded on The New
Sound of Maynard Ferguson and his Orchestra in
1963, this edited version incorporates Maynard's
super-high lines into the chart so that there are no
superhuman concerns in that respect. This piece
has a great feel to it, moving through a lovely
melody to solo space for many players and back
to a cool, quiet ending. This one will make you and
your audience want to dance!

4 Cool Man Jack—Stockton Helbing/arr. Kris
Berg. This sizzlin' chart performed here by Kris
Berg & The Metroplexity Big Band from the CD
Perspectives was written for the South Carolina
All-State Jazz Band. This arrangement utilizes
many color combinations, a dark melody, and a
hard-swinging Elvin Jones style. The chart has solo
space for lead tenor sax and lead trombone, which
leads to a powerful shout chorus before ending with
a recap of the introduction. Perfect as an opener or
change-of-pace chart, it is orchestrated for 5-4-4-5
(including vibes).

H Count Bubba—Gordon Goodwin. Here's a
monster of a swinger that's designed to feature
the entire ensemble. In addition to a wonderful riff-
based theme and a very satisfying shout chorus,
the chart includes section feature spots for saxes,
trumpets and trombones, without the rhythm
section. Very effective!

Swinging For The Fences . . . .19.95
4 Crisis—Freddie Hubbard/arr. Mike Kamuf. The
entire ensemble gets a workout on this highly
creative chart! The overriding style is driving
swing alternating with some Latin statements
of the melody. Suggested solos are included for
trombone, tenor, trumpet, and guitar or optional
alto sax, but improvised solos are welcome. The
tempo is 164-172 bpm, the lead trumpet range is
to written B above the staff, and there's a roaring
shout chorus. Optional parts are included for
flute and vibes. This chart will be a highlight on
any program!
11198970 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .54.00
Curveball—Paul Baker. Featuring a tenor
saxophone soloist, Curveball is in the style of the
Ray Charles big band. It opens with huge ensemble
brass and bluesy sax lines that switch in and out
of a double-time swing feel. The navigation from
swing ballad style, double-time feel, and true
medium swing and the return to the original swing
ballad style helps to define the chart throughout.
A soulful melody for the soloist, which is written
and improvised, is icing on the cake, along with
an improvised solo and cadenzas at the end. Brass
ranges: trumpet to written high D and trombone to
written G. This is a real powerhouse chart for the
entire band and an important addition to the tenor
sax solo repertoire!
10999408 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .55.00
Feeling Good—Bricusse & Newley/arr. Dallas
Burke. This Bricusse and Newley Broadway
classic has enjoyed immense popularity since
the version recorded by Michael Buble. This
chart begins with with an epic and swingin'
full-ensemble section reminiscent of the Buble
version. There's a sultry trumpet solo before
the band cranks into an uptempo Latin groove
featuring room for soloists and lots of inventive
horn lines. The chart goes back to the original
swing style to bring the house down for a big
ending! Highly recommended!
