This arrangement features solos by tenor saxophone, guitar, and trumpet. It takes some mature soloists to sustain the improvisations. Working through different key areas, the writing employs lush orchestration and smooth, ear-catching counterpoint throughout. From Chick Corea's My Spanish Heart album, this tune is not really a "rhumba," but rather an extremely energetic samba. The essence of the original is captured here with this updated version of Dave Brubeck's classic tour de force in a big-band setting! The meter alternates from a 9/8 straight Afro-Cuban feel to a more relaxed 12/8 swing style, and they blend perfectly with Brubeck's rhythmic patterns. As the title implies, this Michael Mossman original captures a Bolivian style utilizing various layers of sound and shifting moods. A 60.00 Bossa Nova de Funk—Willy Maiden. Recorded on The New Sounds of Maynard Ferguson and his Orchestra in 1963, this is the original version of the chart (instrumentation: four saxophones, four trumpets, two trombones, piano, bass, and drums) as composed by one of the most creative writers in jazz history, Willie Maiden. There is also an edited version available with standard instrumentation. This piece has a great feel to it, moving through a lovely melody to solo space for many players and back to a cool, quiet ending. Recorded on The New Sound of Maynard Ferguson and his Orchestra in 1963, this edited version incorporates Maynard's super-high lines into the chart so that there are no superhuman concerns in that respect. This piece has a great feel to it, moving through a lovely melody to solo space for many players and back to a cool, quiet ending. Recently featured in the motion picture "Whiplash," this barnburner by outstanding arranger John Wasson is pure Latin fire from start to finish! With the opportunity for an extended alto sax solo, this Rolls Royce of an arrangement is definitely top-notch! 2402725 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . .MA 60.00 Cerebro Congelado—Gordon Goodwin. Gordon Goodwin presents a funky Latin/pop original targeted at the skilled high school level. As with all Goodwin charts, it's very exciting and drives from beginning to end. It's played around 176 bpm with the lead trumpet range going to written high C. This jazz standard composed by Dave Brubeck came to notoriety on the landmark 1957 Miles Davis/Gil Evans collaboration Miles Ahead. A piano solo is featured off the top, followed by a trio of tenor, trombone and guitar on the head, and later solo space for one or more of these players.
