ORIGINAL CONCERT WORKS easy
Greater Than...—Brian Balmages. Commissioned
by the National String Project Consortium, this
gorgeous lyrical work can be performed alone
as an intermediate level piece, or with multi-
level supplemental parts (available separately)
for beginning and developing string students.
Orchestrated to celebrate inclusion and diversity, the
multi-level option is designed to sound far "greater
than" the intermediate version alone. An outstanding
choice for a festival setting or pyramid concert.

Groundhog's Revenge—Seth Gamba. This fun
bluegrass-style piece written in G pentatonic does an
excellent job of spreading out the melody and making

H Guest Soloist—Richard Meyer. Your audience
will get a real chuckle from this fun, interactive
piece that spotlights a volunteer from the audience
playing on a two-string violin (or any instrument you
choose to use). This delightful original work requires
absolutely no rehearsal ahead of time with the
soloist (honestly!) who is cued in with taps on the
shoulder. Everyone will be amazed as a volunteer
from the audience, chosen on the spot, becomes
the next "virtuoso." A two-minute concerto that will
positively bring down the house!

Gypsy Tale—Soon Hee Newbold. Nothing brings
string-playing to life quite like the dramatic sounds
of Hungarian dances or traditional gypsy music!
With that as inspiration, Soon Hee Newbold created
a work infused with that passion, but playable
at the easy level! It's set in E minor and calls for
some pizzicato, with bowing that alternates from a
"brush-stroke" to a warm legato bowing. Trills and
grace notes are optional but really add to the style.

Just So in the North—Ignatius Sancho/arr.
Dion Morales. This fun arrangement in D major is
based on an 18th-century dance tune written by
escaped slave Ignatius Sancho. Each section gets
a turn with the melody. Skills students will reinforce
include string crossings, pizzicato, arco and back,
and eighth, quarter, and half-note rhythms. Basses
practice easy shifting. Instructions for the dance
that goes with the tune are included, so don't be
surprised if the audience dances along!

days of Kings and Knights in armor, ready for battle!

La Mariposa—Lorrie Baum. La Mariposa, or
"The Butterfly" in English, gives students exposure
to Latin music in the form of the mambo, a
syncopated style of music and dance that originated
in Cuba in the early 1900s. Alternating between D
major and D minor, the melodic material in La
Mariposa is evenly distributed between the high
and low strings. The easy optional percussion parts
add great dimension to the Latin feel of this piece.

Momentum—Robert Longfield. Here's a very
creative work in a simple ABA form that will show
your orchestra in the best light. It begins with a
driving rhythmic melody that generates a great
deal of intensity. As the "Momentum" begins to
slow, your first violin has a brief solo opportunity to
show off some lyrical playing over pizzicato strings.
The haunting melody moves toward a glorious key
change, and a brief passage for solo string quartet
gives a captivating change of texture. It ends with
a dramatic return to the opening material. Very
accessible and a great addition to your next concert!
