The following notes apply to the original production of The Sailor's Bible. We offer them as a helpful guideline, which you can change or adapt to fit your own situation. Additional notes and diagrams can be found online. Go to www.hopepublishing.com and bring up this product's page and the link to a free "Director's Page." COSTUMES: When the show is performed in its entirety, each cast member wears a simple blue T-shirt, a white sailor's cap, black pants, and deck shoes or tennis shoes. If you like, you could add a sailor's neckerchief to this basic outfit. When cast members assume the role of various characters, they remove their sailor hats and put on simple costume pieces appropriate to that character. Mr. and Mrs. Noah, Noah's family—"Biblical" headbands and sashes Neighbors—headbands and sashes in a color that sets them apart from Noah and his family Animals in the Ark—It is not necessary to costume the animals mentioned in the song "When Life is a Zoo." However, in the original production, Chorus members put on distinctive animal hats during the number. Nerdy Character—thick "nerd" glasses with white tape on the bridge of the nose. Jonah—"Biblical" headband and sash Ninevites—sunglasses King of Nineveh—crown Paul—"Biblical" headband and sash Prison Guard and Soldiers—red headbands and sashes Governor Festus—a black top hat Centurion Julius—a Roman helmet Captain—contemporary captains hat Angel—a white robe and halo. Wings are suggested by two cast members standing behind the Angel, each holding a piece of white, flowing material behind the Angel's shoulders. All Sailors and Storytellers remain in their sailor outfits. When each story is performed separately, there is less need for rapid costume changes and no need for an entire chorus of sailor/storytellers. In these cases, you might consider dressing the entire cast in simple Biblical dress rather than sailor outfits, e.g. earth tone T-shirts, a sash, and a headband. STAGING AND MOVEMENT: (Much of the staging and movement is already indicated in the script and score. These are additional suggestions.) For Preview Only
