Original Concert Works
Very Easy
AftershockLarry Clark. Beginning with a bold
and aggressive fanfare-type statement and a
number of dramatic pauses, this forceful piece is
sure to make an impact on the audience. Using two
repeated eighth note patterns as the most difficult
rhythm, the theme includes some dissonances that
create musical tension. The dynamics bring out the
emotion of the piece from beginning to end. Intense!

AirplaneMichael Hopkins. An exciting airplane
ride is depicted in this fun piece for beginning
string groups. The sections of the orchestra enter
gradually and the tempo of the piece increases as
the plane accelerates down the runway and takes
off. Gradually building to a fortissimo, the music
then becomes quieter as the plane descends,
and the music gradually slows as the plane
comes to a stop at the gate. In addition to being
a great piece for working on tempo changes and
dynamics, it reinforces a crisp detached bow
stroke on the quarter notes, smooth repeated
eighth notes, and using full bows on the half
notes. Imaginative and effective!

n AntagonistLarry Clark. In every great story
there is always an antagonist, the character whose
opposing force is central to the success of the
story. This concept has been applied to music in
this selection for string orchestra. The piece is
aggressive and at times purposely antagonizing.
Designed with the youngest of players in mind, it
works on simple repeated eighth-note patterns as
the foundation for the melodic material. Interesting
parts are provided for all instruments, and everyone
gets to play the melody. Impressive!

n Appalachian HymnSoon Hee Newbold. This
lyrical work was inspired by the traditional folk
tunes and hymns of the Appalachians. Using mostly
a simple pentatonic scale, the warm melody evokes

makes even smaller groups sound full. This is an
ideal choice for your next concert.

Battle QuestMike Forbes. Give your beginning
string players a challenge with this aggressive
sounding work. The thematic material is first heard
in the violas as the rest of the sections play basic
rhythms in 4/4, but with shifting accents, creating
the illusion of mixed meters. The excellent use of
dynamics, articulation and pizzicato provide young
players with "meaty" material that makes them
sound much more advanced.

ExpressionsBill Calhoun. Thick, lush chords
are heard throughout this gentle, tender piece for
young players. As the title implies, it is a study in
expression, which challenges the ensemble's
command of bow speed and vibrato. Its chorale-
like nature makes use of non-chord tones to project
its emotion, asking each performer to play with
maximum ensemble awareness and sensitivity. This
gorgeous piece is a moving addition to any program.

Jasmine Flowerarr. Douglas Wagner. Here is
a very beautiful setting of the traditional Chinese

beauty of the lovely white jasmine blossom and its
delightful scent. Players will encounter no technical
impediments in performance, with the independent
piano accompaniment and optional percussion
creating the perfect musical landscape for this
multicultural offering. Very nice!

Kabuki DanceRichard Meyer. This makes a
great change-of-pace at any performance! The
Japanese sound, brought about with a pentatonic
scale, moves from D major to B minor and offers
colors and textures rarely found in pieces for
young orchestras. Written in ABA form, the work
begins with a delicate pizzicato section, followed
by a more aggressive minor section, then returns
to the opening for a satisfying close. While very
simple note-wise, this piece offers outstanding
opportunities for improvement in ensemble playing,
rhythms, dynamics and pizzicato tone production.
A nice choice!
