[1 Song: Rejoice (At the conclusion of the song, a military-styled PA announcement blares forth. During the announcement, the lights come up on a simple barracks room with a small table with a single-blub lamp, a chair, and a large trunk. LT. KYLE HARGROVE, a 20-something new arrival, slowly enters. He drops his duffle and surveys the room with a mix of exhaustion and resigna- tion.) PA ANNOUNCEMENT: Attention! In commemoration of the day, lights-out will commence one hour later than regulation at 2200 hours. This change in routine will only be observed for December 24th and tomorrow standard protocol will resume. (Sound of microphone being clicked off, then back on.) Uh, Merry Christmas. (Microphone clicked off.) KYLE: (to himself) Merry Christmas. (CAPT. BRAD WILCOX enters, unnoticed. He clears his throat.) CAPT. WILCOX: Excuse me, Lieutenant? KYLE: (looking about, confused) Lieutenant? Is there a … (realizing) Oh. That's me. (saluting) Sir. Sorry, sir. I mean, sorry, Lieutenant. CAPT. WILCOX: (smiling) I think you're the Lieutenant… Lieutenant. KYLE: (sighing) Of course. Captain. CAPT. WILCOX: (extending his hand) Brad Wilcox. You only need to remember the Captain business when a Corporal shows up. Welcome to the base, Lt. Hargrove. (They shake hands.) KYLE: Kyle. Please. CAPT. WILCOX: Kyle. Or should I call you Reverend? KYLE: No, no. Not yet. I'm still in seminary. One more semester to go. I plan to finish this spring – while I'm over here. CAPT. WILCOX: You're a lucky man. KYLE: How so? CAPT. WILCOX: Getting started in your career while you're finishing school. I'm happy the Army has made that provision. You're not the first new chaplain I've served with that still had a course or two in Greek left. 114 For Preview Only
