KYLE: My Greek is fine. But my preaching – well, that needs a lot more practice. CAPT. WILCOX: You'll get plenty of opportunities for that. Glad you jumped the gun a bit. KYLE: This assignment is what I've been working for all these years; I couldn't pass it up. Guess I'm a little anxious. Becoming a chap- lain, I mean. (to himself) I hope… I'm ready… CAPT. WILCOX: Long flight? KYLE: Twenty-one hours. I've given up trying to calculate what time it is back home. CAPT. WILCOX: You know, you surprised us a little. We weren't expecting you until after New Year's. Not many people would be willing to sac- rifice a Christmas Eve at home. KYLE: (reflectively) I travel light in that department. My folks have both passed on and my sister and her family live on the other side of the country. Thank goodness my five-year-old niece, Caitlin, is such a reliable pen pal. Until Twitter becomes advanced enough to transmit crayon, I have to rely on my friend, the US Postal Service. CAPT. WILCOX: (laughing) Mail call in the Army will never become obsolete. (looking about) I'm sorry your room is so basic. Not much to re- mind you of home, I'm afraid. KYLE: I haven't seen much evidence of Christmas over here, that's for sure. No stars tonight either. Hard to believe it's December 24th without at least one star in the sky. CAPT. WILCOX: Well, it's difficult to schedule Christmas in the Army, Lieu- tenant. Especially on the other side of the globe. (brightening) But listen, we're having a little celebration tonight in about an hour. Maybe you'd like to come. KYLE: Oh, I don't know… CAPT. WILCOX: It's nothing formal. Just some singing and stories. We even have a tree, though it's pretty bare. KYLE: It sounds great, but I'm afraid that… CAPT. WILCOX: You know, Lieutenant, a lot of people here miss Christmas, too. You might be able to lift their spirits – offer a word of encourage- ment – maybe even get some practice in on your preaching. 115 For Preview Only
