PVT. JENSEN: No, keep it. It's actually not a bad read. And who knows, maybe you'll change your mind. We'll be singing for each of the bar- racks, then meeting at the mess hall for… KYLE: (jumping in) … a little celebration, yes. I know all about it. (smil- ing) 2100 hours, wasn't it? PVT. JENSEN: (back to all-army) Affirmative, sir. KYLE: Well, have a good time. PVT. JENSEN: (saluting) Joy to the world, Lieutenant. KYLE: (saluting back) Joy. I'll take that on advisement, Private. (PVT. JENSEN exits, leading the carolers offstage and singing with them.) PVT. JENSEN: (singing) "Joy to the world the Lord is come, let earth receive her King…" (The voices fade out. KYLE chuckles and waves, then looks inside the car- oling book, moving to the chair to sit.) KYLE: Not a bad read, eh. Okay, let's see. Chapter One: "Angels, from the Realms of Glory" by James Montgomery, 1816. (A light comes up on the figure of JAMES MONTGOMERY at a writing desk; as KYLE reads aloud, MONTGOMERY's voice overlaps, then takes over.) "Angels, from the realms of glory, wing your flight o'er all the earth. (Ye who sang creation's story) JAMES MONTGOMERY: (Ye who sang creation's story) (now speaking alone) Now proclaim Messiah's birth; come and worship, come and wor- ship, worship Christ the newborn King." KYLE: (turns the page) Chapter Two: "Hark! the Herald Angels Sing" by Charles Wesley, 1739. (Another light comes up on the figure of CHARLES WESLEY at another writing desk; as KYLE continues to read aloud, WESLEY's voice overlaps, then takes over.) "Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King." (Peace on earth and) CHARLES WESLEY: (Peace on earth and) mercy mild God and sinners recon- ciled. Joyful, all ye nations rise…! KYLE: (engrossed) Joy again. This is a bit of a page turner. ]31 Song: Glory to the Newborn King 120 For Preview Only
