("In His Presence (Worship Medley)" concludes and the lights dim on the choir. KYLE is still deep in thought. PVT. JENSEN enters the room, clear- ing his throat. He holds several pieces of mail.) PVT. JENSEN: Uh, Lieutenant? (KYLE doesn't respond; PVT. JENSEN speaks loudly.) Lieutenant Hargrove, sir? KYLE: (startled, standing) Private Jensen. I'm so sorry. I was… lost in thought. I didn't hear you come in. PVT. JENSEN: (saluting) My apologies, sir. I know it's late. KYLE: Do you need your caroling book back? (riffling through the books) I'm afraid it's gotten buried. PVT. JENSEN: No, no, of course not. We have plenty. Actually, the caroling is over. I'm on my way to the mess hall for the (little celebration)… KYLE: (saying it at the same time) … (little celebration), I remember… PVT. JENSEN: And Captain Wilcox asked me to drop this off for you. (extending the envelopes) Uh, it's mail, sir. KYLE: (smiling, taking the envelopes) Yes, I vaguely remember what it looks like. PVT. JENSEN: The Captain thought these would cheer you up. He wanted to be sure you got them tonight – so you wouldn't spend Christmas Eve alone. You know. KYLE: (genuinely touched) You tell him thank you. But, I haven't exactly been alone. (patting the stack of books) Helen… Corrie… Luke… PVT. JENSEN: (confused, looking about) Sir? KYLE: Never mind. Ha. Look at this: Merry Christmas from my friend, the US Postal Service. (throwing each envelope on the table) My deposit from my old apartment. The spring schedule of classes from the seminary. And… (happily holding up a large envelope) … some real tidings of comfort and joy! From my niece, Caitlin. PVT. JENSEN: I'll leave you to read your letter, sir. KYLE: It's probably pretty short.
