INNKEEPER:
Oh
yes, we celebrate with songs of joy on this night*, but back then, in the little
town of Bethlehem, there was no celebrating on that night Jesus was born. It was a
mess. Blame it on Caesar for ordering that census. Blame King David for having so
many descendants! But it wasn't my fault. And it wasn't my fault that there
was…that's right…as you've heard, "no room in the inn." My inn. But there was
no room in any of the small, cramped inns of Bethlehem that night. And then along
came this young couple asking for a room. He said his wife was about to have a
baby. I thought that was a great story to get a room. But then I saw her. She was so
young. And clearly with child. I felt sorry for them, so I offered them my stable.
At least there was some fresh hay in it. And so "it came to pass," as it is written.
Who would believe such an unbelievable miracle would have come to pass in
Bethlehem, of all places? Mary had her Baby in my manger! Bethlehem, and the
world, would never be the same.
*or day.
