79 44526 44526 Upon a Midnight Clear can be presented effectively in a straightforward cantata style with no special lighting or staging. Or, for those who wish a more dramatic experience, utilize the following suggestions to enhance the presentation. The monologues imbedded in the narration can be costumed and lighted. Have each monologue delivered from different parts and/or levels of the playing area for visual variety. PROLOGUE: STAND STILL, AND WAIT Before the music begins, the sanctuary lights are lowered, revealing a single white, lit candle on the altar or other prominent spot in front of the congregation. The lighting should reflect the mysterious mood of the "Prologue." The soloist appears (gently lighted) and sings the opening solo. If possible, position the choir in the rear of the sanctuary from where they sing the "Prologue." JOYFUL AND TRIUMPHANT The choir sings the beginning of the piece still from the rear of the sanctuary, then processes at measure 30, during "O Come, All Ye Faithful." HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED PEACE Consider liturgical dancers and PowerPoint images of various traditional manger images, stained glass, etc. O COME, LITTLE CHILDREN with HE IS BORN If a children's choir is used, position them prominently. They exit after the song is completed. UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR This is another excellent moment to incorporate PowerPoint and/or video images/still photographs. There is purposely no narration following this anthem, leading into "Let Earth Receive Her King" in order to create a stark and immediate change of mood from reflective to celebrative. LET EARTH RECEIVE HER KING If liturgical dancers were used earlier, this is an excellent time for them to return. Use them judiciously, however, so as not to distract from the congregational singing portions of this anthem. MARY HAD A BABY! AMEN! A simple manger scene (complete with Mary and Joseph) could be placed to the right or left of the choir, and if so, during this anthem, the actors who delivered monologues can come to the manger and worship the Christ Child.
