Christmas & Holiday | Small Ensemble
Two Masterworks
arr. Martha Lynn Thompson.
This suite of two classical masterworks, Come
Ye Lofty, Come Ye Lowly and Sheep May Safely
Graze is easily playable by six or seven ringers
plus a musician on a C Instrument. The first
piece incorporates The First Noel which fits
nicely over the
OLD BRETON melody. The second
is an abridged version of the Bach classic with
flute taking the chorale melody over a bell
accompaniment. Perform together or separately to
add a grace filled moment to worship or concert.

Watchman, Tell Us of the Night
arr. Kathleen Wissinger.
Set a reverent mood during Advent with this
ethereal arrangement of
ABERYSWYTH for an
easy to medium-level bell tree solo and piano.
The bell tree range is 17 bells C5-C7 (opt. D7,
Eb7), which can also be played by a four-in-
hand trio or any number of ringers. Multiple
options are offered. This richly harmonized
arrangement captures the mystery and majesty
of the coming Lord. The hymn text Jesus, Lover
of My Soul is also commonly paired with this

and teachers have chosen!
Shrinking ensemble size?
• Two or three octave music can be adapted to a small number of ringers in various
ways. One is by using 4-in-hand for the upper treble notes. For example, G6
through C7 can be rung by one ringer with G and B in the left hand, A and C in
the right. This assignment keeps the line/space relationship, creates a more legato
melody line and allows for smooth damping when ringing notes sequentially.
• Usually, the 6th and 7th scale tones are less busy. You might be able to leave
those notes out but if not, assign those few notes to other positions. In the
key of C, this would be Position 7 (A5/B5.) In the key of G, this would be
Positions 2 or 9 (E/F#)
• Are there positions that only ring a few times? Find someone not ringing in
those measures and give them an extra bell. Or two!
• Many times, one ringer can ring two positions by weaving and playing 'off
the table'. C4-F4, or G4-C5 are common positions that can be combined.
• Versatility is the handbell director's middle name! Many times we have to
think outside the box and adapt music to fit whoever is available. Reduce
octaves, eliminate doubles, combine parts, or try some small ensemble music
using only treble bells.
