Handbells in Worship | Music for Two Bell Choirs
Music for Two Bell Choirs
Adoration
for Double Handbell Choirs and Optional Timpani
Phyllis S. Kirk.
Commissioned for the 1997 Hagerstown Area
Handbell Festival, this original work is for
double handbell choir and timpani. Choir I is
for 2 octaves of bells or choir chimes and Choir
II is for either 3, 4, 5 or 6 octaves. The timpani
part is optional and is included in back of the
bell score. The composer writes: "Except for
the Fanfare, each choir plays different music,
but both parts fit together." She goes on to give
more performance suggestions and mentions
the fact that this piece can be played by one
choir if desired. In G Major, 38 measures.

Antiphonal Fanfare
Jason W. Krug.
This unique selection opens up the world of
antiphonal music to ensembles that don't have
an extra set of bells sitting around. Using just one
three-octave set of handbells split between two
groups, this powerful fanfare is sure to make an
exciting aural and visual impression on audiences
and congregations. It is 77 measures in length.

Antiphonal Sarabande
Shirley Lewis Brown.
This composition is excellent for general use
during the church year. Terraced dynamics are
used to achieve the antiphonal effect. Another
possibility is to use 2-octave handbells with
2-octave choirchimes antiphonally. The slow
tempo of the work makes it easy for a new choir,
with the main challenges being the eighth notes
and frequently changing dynamic levels. 48
measures long, this work is scored in a minor.

Celestial Lights
For Double Bell Choir and Boomwhackers
Carl Johanson.
Bring the twinkling stars in the heavens to the
audience with this original composition using
handbells, handchimes, and Boomwhackers.
Perfect for a combined number to showcase
many levels of ringers. Plus an added
Boomwhacker part with color coding notation
makes this a great piece for beginners to play
along with a more advanced group. This piece
is reproducible only for the number of ringers in
your ensemble(s).

Echo Carol
A. Zabel.
This setting of the traditional German carol is for
two choirs: handbells and handchimes, or bells
and bells. The tempo is allegro in cut time, the
texture strongly chordal, and the play between
the two choirs is, well, in echo fashion! Inner
passages spice up things with some staccatto
articulations, and a strong shake oversees the
final chords. It is 77 measures.

Echo Song
Orlando Di Lasso/arr. Patricia Hurlbutt.
The choral piece this edition is based on uses
two equal choirs singing the same material a
half measure apart. To maintain the echo effect
in this transcription for handbells and keyboard,
the handbell ensemble should be softer than the
keyboard. Another option is to have the piece
performed by two handbell ensembles each
playing the handbellscore a half measure apart. In
this case the keyboard score would not be played.

Fanfare For A Celebration
Lee J. Afdahl.
Check this double handbell choir selection
out for your next festival or concert! Choir I is
for 4-5 octaves, level 3 and Choir II is for 2-3
octaves, level 2-. The optional trumpet adds to
the excitement. Sixteenth-note fanfare rhythms
and mallets on tabled bells characterize the
mood as well as mart-lifts in a second section.

Fanfare of Praise
Karen Lakey Buckwalter.
This flexible arrangement offers performance
options for great value and versatility. It can be
a combined performance for two choirs (4-5
octave and 3 octave), or a featured number
for one 4-5 octave choir. Finally, the 3 octave
choir can perform the version with piano
accompaniment. A joyous selection for any
worship or concert setting.

A Festive Introit
Victor L. Gumma.
This introit is written for either two 2 octave bell
choirs, or bells and organ. Written in mostly
antiphonal style, several bell techniques are
evident. 39 measures.

Greensleeves
arr. Cathy Moklebust.
The 16th-century English ballad is scored for
double choir of 3, 4 or 5 octaves of handbells
and 2-3 octaves of handchimes. The chime part
is easier than the bell part, making this piece
a good choice for combining two groups of
differing ability levels. An original theme serves
as an introduction, interlude and ending for this
richly harmonized arrangement.

Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah
arr. Bill Ingram.
The beloved hymn Cwm Rhondda is presented
in a creative and fresh way in Bill Ingram's
arrangement, set for two handbell choirs, or
for one choir and keyboard. The setting can
be done with bells, chimes, two choirs, or one
choir with piano. Since choir I is arranged at
Level 3 while choir II is Level 2, you can choose
which version best fits your choir's proficiency
and assign the other choir part to your pianist.
Effective and useful throughout the church year.

Over the summer or on a light Sunday,
keep your ringers busy by adding bells
to hymns. Stand around the sanctuary
and random ring a pentatonic scale,
or use singing bells. You can also string
bells on a bell tree for one person to
play. There are no wrong notes with a
pentatonic scale!
