Very Easy and Easy
H As If to Say GoodbyeLarry Neeck. Beautifully
melodic and very approachable, this lush ballad
features your star trumpet or alto sax soloist.
A beautifully written melody and fully scored
backgrounds make this a perfect chart for a
young soloist, as well as a great vehicle for a
more experienced player. It will also sound full
and complete with a reduced instrumentation of 3
saxes, 3 trumpets, 1 trombone and 3 rhythm on up
to a full band. For that change-of-pace moment in
your concert, this flexible solo feature is the perfect
choice! Highly recommended!

n At the End of the DayPaul Clark. At the End
of the Day is an exceptional ballad solo feature
for alto sax or trumpet/flugelhorn. The solo and
rhythm section parts are completely written and
the ranges are modest with the trumpets never
leaving the staff. The lush background parts are
supportive for the soloist and the key change near
the end adds just the right touch to this beautiful
chart. Very nice!

H Autumn MistLarry Neeck. Autumn Mist
features your aspiring trumpet/flugelhorn or alto
sax soloist in a gorgeous rock-ballad setting. The

sections provide contrast by featuring lush playing
by the full band with lots of teaching moments in
lyrical style. On your next concert, showcase the
softer, lyrical side of your band with this tasty
change of pace. Highly recommended! Optional
reduced instrumentation.

Chase the Clouds AwayChuck Mangione/arr.
Mike Lewis. Need a pretty ballad? This is ideal for
younger players as arranged by Mike Lewis. It has
plenty of unisons and harmonies in thirds with no
individual solos and the 1st trumpet range goes only
to written, third space C. Smooth, lyrical and easy

H Georgia on My MindHoagy Carmichael/
arr. Michael Sweeney. This enduring standard by
Hoagy Carmichael continues to sound fresh year
after year. This easy setting hints at the great Ray
Charles' recording, with its lush harmonies and
bluesy ballad style. Short solos for trumpet, sax and

4 Going Homearr. Paul Clark. Here is a beautiful
and creative adaptation of the familiar theme
from Dvorak's "New World" Symphony. This
arrangement is just what you need for that ballad
spot for any performance. Written as a trumpet
or flugelhorn solo feature, it works equally well if
you want to feature an alto saxophone soloist. The
frequently changing harmonies and flowing counter
lines keep things interesting, and the limited ranges
and easy rhythms keep things simple. No worries
here, this one is highly recommended!

H
Harlem NocturneEarle Hagen/arr. Rick
Stitzel. Every aspiring jazz player is familiar with
this haunting ballad that achieved notoriety as
the theme song for television's Mike Hammer
series. While not a feature ballad, the saxophone
section takes the spotlight here while the brass
adds background figures to spice things up. Also
included is a written solo or soli for saxes. Play it
with full band or with as few as 4 saxes, 3 trumpets,
3 trombones and rhythm section. Add more color
by including the optional parts for flute, 2 clarinets,
horn in F and tuba. This is an extremely nice ballad
for younger groups!

4 Helloarr. Rick Stitzel. Adele's mega-hit ballad
adapts nicely for young players in this well-paced
arrangement by Rick Stitzel. A solo alto sax starts
things out, then the melody is passed to the
trombones, and then the full band settles into a
beautiful rock ballad. This blockbuster hit is very
effective and provides a beautiful change-of-pace
for any performance by aspiring jazz musicians. It's
also playable with optional reduced or expanded
instrumentations and is highly recommended!

n ImagineJohn Lennon/arr. John Berry. Since
its release in 1971, John Lennon's poignant and
sensitive song remains relevant and popular today.
John Berry's arrangement for younger players is
in the style of a rock ballad with a contemporary
feel, and skillfully passes the melody from section
to section, and has a soulful appeal. Requiring no
solos, it's also playable with optional reduced or
expanded instrumentations. Very nice, indeed!

Li'l DarlinNeal Hefti/arr. Roy Phillippe. This
chart should be in every young band's library! Neal
Hefti's famous tune is the quintessential slow swing
ballad in the Basie style, and every jazzer should be
familiar with it. In this superb edition, the arranger
has changed the key and reorchestrated the parts
so it is playable by ensembles at any ability level,
and with reduced instrumentation as well. The
notes are easy, but there's more music here than
in many more difficult charts. If your students play
only a handful of jazz tunes in their life, this should
be one of them.
