There's nothing like a straight-ahead, medium blues chart for teaching the essential elements of jazz playing. Bacon Suite Blues has it all: a strong melody, solid ensemble writing, varying dynamics and an optional open solo section with included solo sheets. There's a soft ensemble section after the solos that builds to a wonderful shout and then a trombone section soli, then more hard-driving and down home swing leading to a cool finale. From "The Jungle Book," this timeless classic appeared in the original movie as well as the latest blockbuster hit. With a jaunty 2-beat swing style and well-known melody, this one is impossible not to like. This carefully crafted arrangement requires no solos, but features every section of the band with the trombones first, followed by the saxes and finally trumpets. The solo guitar part includes tablature and fingerings for appropriate slides, bends, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and chord shape/performance suggestions. This stunner is optionally playable with reduced instrumentation. Guitar and vibes solo features are hard to find, so make sure to check this one out! Highly recommended! 10607070 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 48.00 Buckjump—Andrews & Ballard/arr. John Wasson. Recorded by Trombone Shorty on his 2011 album For True and featuring the Rebirth Brass Band and 5th Ward Weebie, this hot tune has a funky New Orleans style groove with a moderate tempo and catchy riffs. The trombones get the spotlight to start with, followed by tight ensemble playing and later space for an improvised or written trombone solo. This chart is cool, confident and colorful! Highly recommended! 10556780 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 45.00 Choozin' the Blooz—Rob Vuono, Jr. Here is truly one "blooz" you will want to "chooz!" Featuring a catchy melody, a totally hip set of chord changes, and a tempo around 144 bpm, this chart really swings and lays right in the groove from beginning to end. After the open solo section featuring suggested or improvised solos, the ensemble just builds and builds, leading to an effective shout chorus, replete with exciting drum fills. Creatively scored to sound full with as few as three saxes, three brass, and rhythm section, and with modest ranges throughout, Choozin' the Blooz is a great feature for almost any level band. 10607072 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 48.00 Half Tone, Whole Tone—Lennie Niehaus. After the opening melody there are effective ensemble passages and a solo section for soloists as desired for alto and tenor saxes, trumpet or trombone. After the solos the ensemble really starts to swing with a modulation that builds and builds to a cool finale. This one is fun, entertaining and highly effective! 10605792 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 65.00 Make It Snappy—Larry Neeck. The saxes take the lead in this upbeat, bluesy and swinging shuffle chart set at 144 bpm. Great riffs, reasonable ranges and solid ensemble scoring make this an accessible yet fun chart for your band to rehearse and perform. An optional solo section includes written solos, and the chart sounds exceptional even played with optional limited instrumentation. Ending with a shout chorus that begins with a whisper and ends with a roar, Make It Snappy deserves that special place in any performance! Feature your saxes as well as your full jazz band with this medium-tempo blues in F that really swings! With lots of ensemble writing that sounds big but stays playable, this chart can be performed by almost any developing ensemble. The solo section features a first solo that is written or improvised by trumpet followed by a wonderful ensemble interlude featuring the saxophone section, then a second solo by trombone before more outstanding ensemble work that leads to the satisfying finish. Originally an instrumental composition by Henry Mancini, this engaging tune has been used in various film scores, and later recorded by artists such as Sarah Vaughn and Sergio Mendes. Michael Philip Mossman. Here is the Miles Davis jazz standard skillfully and uniquely arranged for six horns and rhythm section. On the head, the saxes take the signature melody line answered by the brass. The open solo section features tasty background figures, followed by a tutti ensemble section before returning to the head. Instrumentation: six horns (ATB saxes, two trumpets, one trombone) plus four rhythm with optional additional parts for alto, tenor and trombone. That's It is an accessible original utilizing a variety of rhythmic figures commonly used in good swing charts. Additionally, it's playable by as few as 9 players and expandable to full big band instrumentation of 17 players or more.
