ME 52.00 Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)—Santana & Coster/arr. Eric Richards. One of Carlos Santana's more memorable compositions is this instrumental hit from 1976. Along with Santana's own recording, the version by saxophonist Gato Barbieri also became a hit that same year. This solo feature for tenor saxophone features a haunting melody and the sensual style of the original and is authentically recreated in this version for full jazz ensemble. The tenor solo is a combination of written melodies with options for improvisation. Here's a great way to feature your star tenor player! 10625167 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . M 55.00 Going Home—arr. Paul Clark. Here is a beautiful and creative adaptation of the familiar theme from Dvorak's "New World" Symphony. This arrangement is just what you need for that ballad spot for any performance. Written as a trumpet or flugelhorn solo feature, it works equally well if you want to feature an alto saxophone soloist. The frequently changing harmonies and flowing counter lines keep things interesting, and the limited ranges and easy rhythms keep things simple. No worries here, this one is highly recommended! 10607076 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . E 48.00 A Hefti Dose of Basie—Patrick Williams. Here's one of those outstanding charts where the title vividly describes the contents. Paying homage to the great Neal Hefti and the iconic Count Basie Orchestra, Patrick Williams has composed a chart that is the epitome of taste and restraint. It's a wonderful ballad with a trumpet 2 improvised solo. There are no technical issues, but the challenge is the slow tempo at around 74 bpm. Once the tempo and style are mastered, it practically plays itself. This is a beautiful change-of-pace chart for many bands. Adele's mega-hit ballad adapts nicely for young players in this well-paced arrangement by Rick Stitzel. A solo alto sax starts things out, then the melody is passed to the trombones, and then the full band settles into a beautiful rock ballad. It's also playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations and is highly recommended! 10617912 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Summer Solstice is a soulfully cool ballad that features either a trumpet, flugelhorn or soprano saxophone soloist with solo parts included for each. Beautifully relaxed in straight eighth-note style, it's well-crafted with the solo parts entirely written with optional improvisation opportunities. The solo part offers interesting chord changes while the ensemble is more than a simple accompaniment. Nice, unique and more contemporary than most solo features! 10607110 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . M 48.00 To You—Thad Jones/arr. There is a short written solo for trombone and a quasi-double-time section after the solo. This is wonderfully beautiful change- of-pace programming! What Will Be is a slow, rock ballad to feature either alto sax, trombone or trumpet/flugelhorn soloists. With a beautifully conceived melody the solo part is highly emotional, lyrical and appropriate for the style, and is supported by an interesting harmonic progression. The soloist is supported by sweet counter melodies, there's a section for subtle improvisation by the featured soloist, and a recap of the theme before moving on to an ending with a brief solo cadenza. There are options included for reduced or expanded instrumentations and the excellent dynamic contrasts provide additional interest and maintain the direction of the chart.
