Round MidnightWilliams & Monk/arr. Mike
Smukal. It's always good programming to include a
ballad and here's a warm and tender ballad feature
for your tenor sax player. This timeless jazz tune,
recorded by countless jazz artists, is scored for
developing groups by arranger Mike Smukal. He
adds the lush harmony you would expect and then
moves into a double time section, returning to the
ballad tempo for the ending. Everything is notated
for the soloist and rhythm section. An excellent
ballad showcase! Highly recommended! Optional
expanded instrumentation.

n SamanthaSammy Nestico. This beautiful
contemporary ballad features your tenor sax in
front of some nice ensemble work. Sammy wrote
this chart for Count Basie, and we're glad he made
this arrangement so that all bands can add this one
to their repertoire. Very pretty!

H
The Shadow of Your SmileJohnny Mandel/
arr. Roy Phillippe. Every now and then it comes
along, a ballad so hauntingly beautiful that it may
just be the highlight of your concert! This is one
such gem. After a solo piano introduction, the
familiar minor melody is gently taken up by the
band. Alto sax and trumpet both get solo passages
but, for the most part, it is the ensemble effort that
makes this chart one of the best.

sultry ballad, set around 62 bpm, features a written
alto sax solo that is wonderfully melodic with an

4 What Will BeMatt Amy. What Will Be is a slow,
rock ballad to feature either alto sax, trombone
or trumpet/flugelhorn soloists. With a beautifully
conceived melody the solo part is highly emotional,
lyrical and appropriate for the style, and is
supported by an interesting harmonic progression.
The soloist is supported by sweet counter melodies,
there's a section for subtle improvisation by the
featured soloist, and a recap of the theme before
moving on to an ending with a brief solo cadenza.
There are options included for reduced or expanded
instrumentations and the excellent dynamic
contrasts provide additional interest and maintain
the direction of the chart. Highly recommended!

Metheny is known for his beautiful melodies, and
Back in Time is no exception. Featuring a flugelhorn
or trumpet soloist throughout on a written-out

Body and SoulJohnny Green/arr. Dave Wolpe.
There's no better way to feature your alto soloist than
with this arrangement! It's one of the most important
ballads in the jazz repertoire, and Dave's chart
brings out all of its lush beauty. A big, expansive
double-time section gives your soloist a chance to

n Come SundayDuke Ellington/arr. John
Fedchock. Now in print for the first time, this
was originally written in 1987 for the Richard
Stoltzman album titled Ebony, featuring the
Woody Herman Big Band. Duke Ellington's Come
Sunday featured Stoltsman as a clarinet soloist.
John Fedchock modified it sometime later to
make it a baritone saxophone solo feature and
added a trombone 4 part to cover the original
baritone sax part. Fedchock's chart is absolutely
gorgeous, featuring lush harmonies, a few
woodwind doubles, beautiful ensemble sections,
and a double-time section for the ensemble. The
baritone sax solo is both written and improvised
and features a wonderful cadenza at the end.
Highly recommended!

l Berlin Bei Nacht—Oliver Nelson/ed. Bob Curnow. As recorded by
the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, Berlin Bei Nacht is the fourth movement of the
Impressions of Berlin suite. Set in an up-tempo fashion, Nelson's forward-
thinking 1971 original starts out with an in-your-face swing unison line played
by the saxophones and the trumpets, with the trombones and rhythm section
providing the undercurrent. It then moves into a half-time Latin feel before
settling into a funk/rock blues solo section for trumpet, or as chosen. This
exciting and unique arrangement will be a favorite for your band and audiences
alike! An optional fifth trombone part is included.

Heidi—Oliver Nelson/ed. Bob Curnow. As recorded by the Oliver Nelson
Orchestra, Heidi is the third movement of the Impressions of Berlin suite. A
gorgeous solo feature for alto saxophone throughout, this piece builds from a
quiet beginning to a very powerful point with a bolero-type tension as it develops,
before it diminishes to a quiet ending. The pro version includes flute doubles,
wider brass ranges, and a lengthier solo as in Nelson's recording, while the
edited version is in a lower key, has a shorter solo section, and simpler brass
ranges making it more playable for both the soloist and the ensemble while still
maintaining the integrity of Nelson's beautiful ballad.

Ku-Damm—Oliver Nelson/ed. Bob Curnow. As recorded by the Oliver
Nelson Orchestra, Ku-Damm is the first movement of the Impressions of Berlin
suite. Based on the blues, as so much of Nelson's music was, this bright swing
with a waltz feel in 6/4 begins with an aggressive line for woodwind doubles
and adds to its intensity with the entrance of the trumpets a short while later.
With solo space for alto saxophone, trombone and piano, this lively, moving
composition is sure to bring an exciting contrast to any program! An optional fifth
trombone part is included.

Wannsee—Oliver Nelson/ed. Bob Curnow. Wannsee is the second
movement of the Impressions of Berlin suite. This lovely, beautiful, haunting
melody features flute and flugelhorn, as they each have the opportunity to
state this captivating theme. Set in a slow 3/4 Latin-ish feel, the lilting groove
provides a mesmerizing backdrop for the melody and eventually moves
into a standard bossa nova groove in 4/4 for the featured flugelhorn soloist.
This chart is professional in its writing yet quite playable due to its moderate
ranges, rhythmic simplicity, and attainable tempo. If you're looking for a unique
ballad, this is the one!

BERLIN SUITE
As recorded in 1970, here is one of the two
suites that Oliver Nelson composed for the

JAZZ HARMONY
BOOK
For All Instrumentalists
and Arrangers
Dan Haerle. Jazz has evolved
its own harmony apart from
other genres of music. In order
to improvise and compose in the
idiom, a basic understanding of
this harmony, how chords move
and connect with each other, is
essential. In this book, noted author
and educator Dan Haerle explains
all the fundamental chord/scale
theory and harmony you need
to know. At the end of the book
are voicings to over 20 standard
chord progressions so that you
can clearly see and hear how the
various rules apply in real world
situations. Written for all musicians,
no keyboard skills are required, but
knowing the names of the notes on
a keyboard will be helpful.
