Featuring a smooth and lyrical melody over a driving samba feel, additional features include plenty of room for soprano or alto saxophone on the melody plus extensive improvisation, along with solo piano space, and roaring ensemble passages. A dramatic style change occurs near the end with the chart going into 3/4 at a slower tempo featuring a more traditional version of the melody that leads to a satisfying finish. Additionally, this chart features unison writing across the ensemble in the melody line and supportive roles within the sections and some high trumpet playing. Originally recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on their album Afrique, Kilimanjaro is a mesmerizing, easy-feeling Latin composition which pulses along with a constant tumbao bass groove and infectious percussion. Featuring flute and trumpet on the melody, this chart has a very bluesy touch and allows for soloists as chosen. MA 55.00 Salt City Samba—Andrew Neu. Salt City Samba is an American/Brazilian samba that is perfect for advancing groups. Similar in style to American/Latin jazz artists Chuck Mangione and Spyro Gyro, this samba original also channels the infectious music of Brazil with the half-note equaling 108 bpm. An open solo section, written or ad lib, is followed by a very interesting call and response section, and then a driving shout chorus making this an exciting closer for any program. The alto 1 part doubles on soprano sax, however an optional alto 1 only part is provided. This arrangement of the classic Luiz Bonfa samba is played at around 208 bpm. It's bright, happy, upbeat, and festive throughout, with the initial melody stated by alto 1 and trumpet 2 with solo chord changes for each. The groove switches to swing midway, then back to the samba feel.
