Instantly recognizable by all, here is one of the all-time great movie themes in a masterful arrangement for younger players. Paul Murtha does a great job of capturing the authentic sound of Mancini's classic from the familiar bass line, smooth tutti passages, and solo section for tenor sax or trumpet. This version for younger players features tenor sax and trumpet on the head followed by the full sax section with answers from the brass. It's a terrific piece for young soloists, as well as a good style study for the entire ensemble. Shuffle on Down roars right from the start and is a perfect opener. The melody uses notes from the blues scale and is passed all around the band. The shout chorus really wails for this grade level. Sure to be a crowd pleaser, it features an easy grade level, moderate ranges, notated rhythm section parts, written or improvised solos for all players, and is playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations. Now even your beginning jazz band can swing this incredibly popular chart that was made famous by Benny Goodman! The original Nat Adderly gospel/rock-style recording is the starting point for this accessible arrangement. There's also a solid shout chorus that leads to a soft ensemble passage before the written alto sax solo. Here is a slow, swinging, lovely, warm, relaxed chart in the style of that famous Neal Hefti swing ballad! The arrangement is subtle and easy to play, and there are not a lot of pieces by Pat Metheny that swing in this way. The arrangement suggests flugelhorns throughout, although trumpets would work just fine. There is solo space for alto saxophone and trumpet/ flugel. John Lewis (composer, pianist, and founder of the acclaimed Modern Jazz Quartet) penned Afternoon in Paris in the 1950s and it has remained a jazz standard ever since.
