by Neal Hefti, this is the original chart that says just
about everything there is to say about relaxed, laid-

4 Little Bitty Pretty Onearr. Allen Gray. Allen
Gray has created a nice swing chart for developing
jazz bands on this familiar and fun doo-wop tune
from the past. After the opening melody there are
effective ensemble passages and a solo section for
soloists as desired for alto and tenor saxes, trumpet
or trombone. After the solos the ensemble really
starts to swing with a modulation that builds and
builds to a cool finale. This one is fun, entertaining
and highly effective!

4 Make It SnappyLarry Neeck. The saxes take
the lead in this upbeat, bluesy and swinging shuffle
chart set at 144 bpm. Great riffs, reasonable ranges
and solid ensemble scoring make this an accessible
yet fun chart for your band to rehearse and perform.
An optional solo section includes written solos, and
the chart sounds exceptional even played with
optional limited instrumentation. Ending with a
shout chorus that begins with a whisper and ends
with a roar, Make It Snappy deserves that special
place in any performance! Highly recommended!

Minor ChantStanley Turrentine/arr. Terry
White. This arrangement of a Stanley Turrentine
signature tune is not difficult at all, but it sounds
very sophisticated! The swingin' melody is initially
handled by tenor 1 and trombone 1 and the tempo
is around 140 bpm. There are written or improvised
solos for alto, tenor, trumpet, and trombone, great
dynamic contrasts and a nice shout chorus that
begins softly and builds. This is a chart that is solid
throughout and makes excellent use of the full
ensemble. Optional parts are included for expanded
instrumentations. Highly recommended!

n Mr. GK (A Tribute to Gene Krupa)Mike
Carubia. Drum features have always been a big
crowd pleaser in the jazz idiom. This outstanding
tribute to the original big band drum star, Gene
Krupa, features a short, written trumpet solo with
plunger, but this exceptional chart is primarily a
drum feature with solid big band ensemble sections
to drive it along. Full of audience appeal, it's a big
band extravaganza set in the style of the famous
Krupa swing tunes of yesteryear. An optional flute
part is included and the written ranges are: Trumpet
1 to A; Trombone to G; Alto Sax to E.

n The Mudbug StrutPaul Baker. A New Orleans
street parade comes to life with this chart! A
2nd line snare drum beat drives the Dixie-based
ensemble, complete with tailgate trombone. There
are written solos for trombone, alto sax, plunger
trumpet, and bass, and tuba may be substituted for
the bass for even more authenticity. An additional
clarinet part is included as well. An exchange
between the drums and ensemble leads to a roll
off that launches the shout section and traditional
ending. The trumpet range goes to written high G
and trombone to F. Highly recommended!

bridge. This really nice chart also includes very
effective writing for all sections of the band as well
as written or improvised solo space for alto sax.
Highly recommended!

nasty but sound great on this cookin' blues number!
A straight ahead swing tempo drives some really
great licks, including a really hot unison band line
that sounds much harder than it really is. A big
shout chorus and a short drum solo at the end
round things out, and there's an open solo section
with room for any of your players to stretch out. Also
includes a separate solo sheet for guidance.

recorded in 1975 by Count Basie and titled
because Basie loved orange sherbert, this fresh
setting features easy registers, strong jazz figures,
and a bright, free swinging style. A written or ad lib
trumpet solo in the midsection and an ensemble
shout before the final chord are highlights. The
rhythm section parts are notated with chords cued,
and a guitar chord chart is included.

4 Over EasyCarl Strommen. Over Easy features
great Basie-style writing for the full ensemble as
well as solid sectional interplay at a moderate
tempo in a swing style. It's full of nice melodic
statements, stays cool with dynamic highlights,

right! Suggested solos and chord changes are
included in the tenor 1 and trumpet 2 parts.

swing chart played at about 155 bpm that feels like
it came right out of the 30's or 40's and includes a
great sax soli in the middle. There's also a written
or improvised solo section for piano. This is a well-
written and developed chart with nice changes and
a solid feel.

Sing, Sing, SingLouie Prima/arr. Victor Lopez.
Yep, this is the Sing, Sing, Sing you know and

players by Victor Lopez. The classic drum solo that
can be opened up for as much excitement as the
crowd can stand, along with a written-out tenor
solo, reasonable brass ranges and lots of meaty
ensembles keep this great chart exciting. It will
also sound full with reduced instrumentation or
with the optional, non-jazz band parts. It's still a
showstopper! Highly recommended!

4 So What (Little Big Band)Miles Davis/arr.
Michael Philip Mossman. Here is the Miles Davis

for six horns and rhythm section. On the head,
the saxes take the signature melody line
answered by the brass. The open solo section
features tasty background figures, followed by
a tutti ensemble section before returning to the
head. Instrumentation: six horns (ATB saxes,
two trumpets, one trombone) plus four rhythm

10556792 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 45.00
SolarMiles Davis/arr. Rick Stitzel. One of the
most enduring compositions from Miles Davis' early
career is this medium swing tune recorded on the
1954 album Walkin'. Rick Stitzel uses some nifty
phrase extensions in the beginning, then alternates
the full ensemble with statements by a small group
in this terrific chart for younger players. The solo
space is for trumpet and tenor sax with suggested
solos and chord/scale sheets in all keys included.

10098775 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 45.00
H The Star Spangled Bannerarr. Paul Clark.
Although this piece is not usually associated with
jazz bands, this arrangement works so well it
can appropriately be included in any jazz concert.
It's also invaluable to have in the files for those
"emergency" situations where a jazz group is called
upon to perform our National Anthem. It includes
just the right elements to give it a jazz flavor, yet
maintains the dignity and reverence of the original.
While it is harmonically jazzy, it is rhythmically
traditional and can serve as accompaniment for
audience singing. It is also playable with reduced
instrumentation. If your jazz ensemble plays for
basketball games, this is perfect. A wise investment
for all jazz programs! Highly recommended!
