H ChameleonHerbie Hancock/arr. Chris Sharp.
Herbie Hancock wrote this funky jazz standard
many years ago, but it still remains a player and
audience favorite with its hip bass line and hot
melody. This modern take on this funk classic
has plenty of room to get your groove on with
the famous melody. There's also room for soloing
over the friendly chord progression or breaking
it down with some very hip ensemble sections.
Don't miss the great passage where the rhythm
section drops out and the horns go it alone. Nice
chart on a great standard!

H
The ChickenAlfred James Ellis/arr. Kris
Berg. If you've got a strong bassist, this is your
showstopper! This chart, made famous by bass
virtuoso Jaco Pastorius, gets kicking with a killer
gospel chorale, but is soon interrupted by one of
the funkiest bass lines ever played! Soon the entire
band is in on it with a Tower of Power-style sound
that is sure to impress everyone listening!

Chicks Dig ItKris Berg. The "chicken" series
continues with this outstanding funk chart by Kris
Berg. With the chicken-flavored title, this is just
plain funky. The laid-back tempo is around 100
bpm; the solo space is for tenor sax (suggested or
improvised), there's some slap bass licks on the
very hip bass part, and lead trumpet range is to
written B above the staff. Optional flute and vibes
are included. There'll be no squawks from anyone
when you play this! Highly recommended!

4 Chromatically YoursMike Carubia. With a
nice groove and a catchy theme, Chromatically
Yours is a relaxed, minor blues rock chart full of
chromatic lines and fills that will help students to
practice the art of including chromatic lines into
their playing. The ensemble writing is superb, and
the optional open solos are readily accessible over
the two chord changes giving developing soloists
an opportunity to develop confidence. Suggested
solos and chord changes are written into the alto
1, trumpet 2 and trombone 1 parts. An optional
flute part is included as well. An effective call and
response ensemble section between the brass and
saxes brings it to an exciting conclusion.

4 Corn Bread (Little Big Band)Lee Morgan/arr.
Mark Taylor. Similar to Lee Morgan's Sidewinder,
this tune is written in a moderate soul/jazz style.
This funky arrangement for six horns and rhythm
section is sprinkled with stop-time breaks and
catchy riffs, plus it's a fun chart for soloing! The
small band instrumentation is for six horns (ATB

Cut the Cakearr. Mike Tomaro. Scottish funk
group Average White Band had two major hits that
helped solidify the horn-driven funk sound of the
'70s. Pick Up the Pieces was released in 1974
and Cut the Cake followed close behind in 1975.
Signature tunes with catchy horn licks that still
sound great today! Very cool!

n Don't Stop 'Til You Get EnoughMichael Jackson/

H Feels So GoodChuck Mangione/arr. Victor
Lopez. Only rarely does a jazz tune cross over to
the pop charts the way this Chuck Mangione classic
did back in the seventies! Flugelhorn solo on the
1st trumpet part is featured throughout with the
distinctive melody and then with a written or ad lib
solo along with a tenor solo. The flugelhorn solo
range is up to an optional written high C, but the
solo is cued on the 1st tenor part as well. Victor's
arrangement brings this contemporary gem within
the range of the developing trumpet player without
losing any of the hip appeal of the original. Here's
a perennially appealing, samba/rock chart that will
provide outstanding performance opportunities for
your band and soloist! Highly recommended!

chart in 1957 and it was featured on the Dizzy Gillespie album The Greatest
Trumpet Player of Them All. The features include a bluesy sound, interesting

Just By Myself—Benny Golson. This chart provides a wonderful backdrop
for soloing and allowed Dizzy Gillespie to present a warm side of his playing,
seldom seen during his prior recording sessions. Composed by Benny Golson
in 1957, Just By Myself is a medium to bright swing chart beginning with
the trumpet playing the melody and lead within the ensemble, then soloing.
Additional solos are heard by alto and piano with ensemble backgrounds. This is
the original version as played on Gillespie's recording and is fun to play and quite
accessible for small groups. This is an outstanding performance and learning
vehicle! Instrumentation: ATB saxes, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, drums and
optional guitar.

Out of the Past—Benny Golson. This small group chart is a slow swinger
and was featured on the 1957 Dizzy Gillespie album The Greatest Trumpet of
Them All. It opens with trumpet presenting the melody, then trombone, and back
to trumpet. Solo space is offered for tenor, trombone and trumpet, followed by a
restatement and development of the head. There's lots to learn from this quiet,
mellow chart! Instrumentation: ATB saxes, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass,
drums and optional guitar.

Sea Breeze—arr. Benny Golson. Sea Breeze is an impressionistic chart
for small group and is a trumpet feature throughout. Beginning with a rubato
introduction, it alternates between rumba and swing styles, and Golson arranged it
without solos except for the trumpet feature. As is typical of Golson's writing, there
are fresh-sounding harmonies and voicings. This was originally recorded by Dizzy
Gillespie on his 1957 album The Greatest Trumpet of Them All. Instrumentation:
ATB saxes, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, drums and optional guitar.
