Scott Ninmer's burning swing/shuffle chart maintains the blues tradition while mixing in some contemporary harmonies, with nice shout sections for the entire ensemble, all at around 120 bpm. Additional features include lots of solo space for written or improvised trumpet and alto sax solos, a nice groove, and innovative voicings. There's a cool interlude after the solos by the full ensemble, then to a big, showy section featuring piano and rhythm section before a soft section that leads back to the infectious melody. If Nat Adderley could hear this chart on his iconic jazz standard, he would be pleased! The first statement stays very close to the original, which is a good thing. The solos are for written or improvised alto and trumpet, and the solo backgrounds are simply wonderful. This swinger plays well at about 176 bmp, has excellent full-ensemble passages, a bari sax and rhythm section break before the last chorus, an exciting shout chorus, and great development. Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun is masterfully scored for the modern big band, making great use of interesting saxophone effects, a wonderful rhythm section feel, neat rhythmic ideas, and very playable ensemble parts. The trumpet range is an optional written D. The melody is stated by tenor saxophone and trumpet with warm, dissonant backgrounds provided by the ensemble. Blue Tiger is a hard swingin' chart that pays sparkling homage to the great Henry Mancini. Billy Byers' arrangement of Come Fly With Me was recorded on the Basie band's album Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra. The interplay between saxophones and brass is clever and energetic, while the full ensemble writing is the classic Basie sound at its finest. There is solo space for tenor sax with fantastic ensemble backgrounds throughout much of it.
